If you have been paying attention to the events of the last 4 years via the Washington Post, New York Times, or the Internets, you may already know many of the news related items Rajiv Chandrasekaran writes about in the book. But it is through the many slice of life vignettes and I-was-really-there anecdotes that Chandrasekaran recounts the absurdity and danger of Ideological-based 21st Century nation-building. This book was truly a pleasant surprise when I ran across it compiling material for a Judy Garland biography.

I read this book again very recently as part of a program in which volunteers help teach childen and adults who have difficulty with reading and comprehension to read for understanding and ulimately enjoyment. The girl I was reading with was very moved by the book. I guess, I had taken it for granted. Blume clearly knows her audience and speaks to them. As a young, fat boy, I read Blubber and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing (along with 1001 Arabian Nights) over and over under the covers by the yellow haze a penlight affixed to a keychain. There were nights those stories saved me, for those moments I knew I wasn't alone. There were people just like me out there somewhere suffering while running in gym class and stuggling with geometry and telling a 1001 stories to save our lives.

Wow. Okay, so this one creeped me out WAY more than the first one. All the internal conflict for one, all the descriptions of torture for another. Not to mention the embalming scenes. Ew. Intense stuff. And how is it that I fall in love with a sociopath? Hmmm? John Cleaver, you are one interesting dude.

Listened to this one with my 10 year old daughter! Cute fairytale-like story, with good characters.

I was given the chance to read the ARC of this mystery, due out in April 2011. It is the 20th Commissario Guido Brunetti novel, the first published in 1992. As an overall tag for what the book is about, I would say it's a story of possible crimes. Guido Brunetti is an interesting, thoughtful person; highly observant, very little escapes his notice, from the color of grass, to faint bruises along the neck of a dead woman, Signora Altavilla. Along with the bruises, he considers the placement of furniture in the woman's apartment as peculiar. These are two of the elements that set him on an examination of Altavilla's life and habits. Coroner Rizzardi states the woman's death was from a heart attack and she was known for heart problems. Brunetti wonders if the heart failure could have been precipitated by an act of violence against her. He pursues the possibility, aided by his assistant, Inspector Vianello, and by Signorina Elletra, the secretary of his immediate supervisor, who is adept at finding all kinds of info. These characters are ongoing in the series, but I had no trouble picturing them and understanding the relationships Brunetti had with them. The same is true with his wife, Paola, and their two teenage children. I enjoyed the family scenes and the loving sparring between them. I did find Giuseppe Patta, Brunetti's immediate supervisor, is a bit of a cliché--more interested in appearances than crime solving. But Signorina Elettra's personality is so smartly drawn, I think I could recognize her on a street. Brunetti's wonderment if a crime had been committed against Signora Altavilla is the focus of the book; his quest for information turns up other elements that are also possible crimes—events dealing with the an estate and a will; a game of swindle among charity cases. Brunetti pondered them all as he tried to decide what really happened to Altavilla. As he does this, he is still ever observant to his surroundings; descriptions of the Venetian cityscape are nicely presented, and (I haven't been to Venice) I assume they are accurate since Donna Leon has lived in Italy for more than 25 years. I am, however, dissatisfied with ending; I kept checking to see if there was more and still wonder if the e-galley I rec'd was missing a chapter. Although Brunetti seemed satisfied with what he learned, other possibilities remained as to what happened to Signora Altavilla. Her "guest," who left suddenly, hadn't been ruled out (it was a didn't-seem-to-fit phone call cast suspicion here); I even have unanswered questions about her son. And then there are the missing pictures... I also wonder why so much information is given in Chapter 1 about Signorina Guisti, who found Altavilla's body. Do we really need to know about her breakup with a guy and what his family was like? I kept waiting for something about that to resurface later in the story; but actually, the signorina is mentioned only a few times after chapter 6. The intricacies of the government agencies and public services was at times funny and interesting. In all, I enjoyed the book, Well crafted with interesting characters.

The two volumes of tender (one for fruit and one for veg) aren't just recipe books, they give basic instructions on how to grow different varieties. It hadn't even occurred to me that I could mail-order seeds. I know, I know! I am the least green fingered person I know, but these books make even me want to do something - like grow tomatoes on the windowsill in pots! You can sit and read Nigel's descriptions of aubergines or apples and it makes your breath catch. He harnesses every single sense on the page and it is nothing less than an erotic experience. The best thing is that he gives you the basics to make you a better cook in general. Giving examples of how best to incorporate the fruit/vegetable in question. There are a variety of recipes from plain and simple to more complex dishes. I'd gladly give up all the other recipe books I've ever bought (a lot) and just have Nigel's. I should add that I haven't read these from cover to cover (they're huge) but it seemed daft to keep them on my 'currently reading' shelf for all eternity!

Read as part of the FirstReads giveaway. I wanted to like this mire than I did - I'm always up for a retake on Dracula, but this was just meh. Mina was rather annoying, Dracula too under-done to be interesting, and Jonathan a total wuss. The secondary characters were more interesting but, alas, only secondary. It's not a BAD read, no, but it could have been so much better - more character development would have helped, as well the author having a better grasp on the time period. Still, worth taking out of the library if you're interested in Dracula told from Mina's POV.

Şimdiye kadar yazılmış en çekici çevreci kitap. Sessiz Bahar'dan daha ikna edici ve Uygunsuz Bir Gerçek'ten daha az iç karartıcı.
