I vacillated between four and five stars for this book because of one thing. I'm either a terrible Goodreads user or the monkey wrench in the system, or maybe I just can't give up being an English teacher--the truth is that I tend to "grade" things (we'll just ignore the fact that I have no right to grade Alice Walker for the time being) out of a denominator of what I see as their potential, and not some abstract standard. And I'll probably continue doing that, for better or worse. I went with five stars because, well, it's a powerful and important novel, and Walker's prose, deeply human characters, and depiction of the south through imagery, dialect, and control of the narrative are simply genius. It's an incredible work by a writer whom I continue to admire both artistically and personally, and I plan on revisiting it many times in years to come. The only qualm I have is with the conclusion, which I found to be almost jarringly abrupt, and, though satisfying from a narrative standpoint, did not provide the emotional articulation and closure I wanted for the two main characters. Perhaps I'll feel differently about this when I reread--and, given the structure of the novel, it makes sense for the story to end in the way it does. This time, though, as a reader, I wanted more--so much intimate detail and introspection had filled its pages up until that point that the "tie up" felt almost perfunctory. Ultimately, though, The Color Purple is beautiful; spiritually, emotionally, and artistically satisfying. I'm sure that's why I wanted so much more from the last five pages.
