One of if not the best book for learning about God and perspectives from many faiths and philosophies (of course, more time spent on the Judeo-Christian view of God, seeing as the author is an Anglican Priest). THis book literally changed my life.

** spoiler alert ** My review simply echoes the previous ones I read...though I still liked this book better than most other readers seem to. It was good. It drew me in, just like the other books in the series have. However, it did indeed end on a cliffhanger, which is troubling considering how long it takes Britain to write books to add to the series. I didn't mind the romance, mostly because I enjoy the Karigan/Zachary/Estora triangle, and can't wait to see how it goes in the next book (because let's face it...Karigan is not going to die.). I also enjoyed the introduction of the Alton/Estral pairing. In general, an enjoyable addition to the series, though not as well wrapped up as the other books.

The story was very intriguing but not told in the best fashion. The beginning was great, then the middle dragged, then the end was a lot of repetition of the earlier parts of the book. This wasn't surprising though as the author is a scientist, not a writer. Worth checking out.

This book was very hard to get through, but it's just a little better than the first 2...I'll keep plugging away because I keep getting positive reviews about the rest of the books and I really do want to like this series!!

Read this for Battle of the Books, but really enjoyed it. Set in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, this story is about a young girl, Livy Two, who is part of a large and ever-growing family led by a dad who keeps promising to write a top-selling banjo hit and a long-suffering mother who does everything she can to provide for the family. I thought it ended rather abruptly, so I was glad to find out that there is a sequel.

Gotta keep up with the kids... so far so good. Great for those 15 minutes before bed when you need to wind down.

One of my favorite books. Every time I read it, there's something new.

The most enjoyable element of this book is the savvy meta-fiction fun you get from the veiled references to the Narnia and Harry Potter books. The author does a really wonderful job of capturing some of the most enchanting elements of those series and then quickly turning the conventions on their heads, usually connecting them to just how sullen and unreasonable an unhappy teenager can be. I was sure this was going to be a 5 star book in the first half, but ended up being a tad disappointed that the early promise wasn't entirely fulfilled -- fundamentally, i think its because the main protagonist just isn't likeable enough. Highly recommended for anyone who likes to get snarky about Harry Potter on occasion or for literary criticism english majors. Recommended for anyone else!

One word describes Rampant: AMAZEBALLS!!! I closed the covers of this book, set back, and thought, “What did you JUST do, Diane Peterfreund?!?!” My enthusiasm for this book runs away with me so let’s rewind. The best way that I think I can describe Rampant is like this: imagine, if you will, Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now replace the vampires with killer unicorns. Astrid, the Buffy Summers of this novel, is a regular teenage girl until the fateful night when she finds out she has a higher calling: to slay the killer unicorns. Astrid is an amazing character. I love her to pieces! She’s been hearing all these stories of killer unicorns for a huge portion of her life and has largely dismissed them as her mother just being crazy. When it turns out it is true, Astrid steps up to the plate, but reluctantly. Much like Ms. Summers, Astrid just wants to be a normal girl. She doesn’t want to kill things or possibly be killed. But Astrid has a sense of duty and a pride in her heritage, which I love. The plot was off the hook in this novel. When I say I couldn’t put it down, I am not at all exaggerating. I could not put down this novel. Peterfreund is brilliant in her crafting of this story. The plot was perfection, as was the timing, the dialog, the characters…everything. You open this book and you are with Astrid when she first sees a unicorn, you are on the streets of Rome with her, you are by Astrid’s side when she kills her first unicorn. Peterfreund has massive amounts of talent. MASSIVE. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is the first in a series and I will definitely be checking out the next installment in the series. I must warn you, though. After reading this book, you will NEVER think about unicorns the same way. But it’s so worth it!
