I don't like Virginia Woolf normally -I've tried and tried. I've tried "To the Lighthouse", I've tried "Mrs. Dalloway" and somewhere along the way I just fall off the book. But Orlando (assigned for my Sex and the Novel class) was a revelation. Just sheer poetry and witty observations on gender and class and- did I mention the descriptions. Beautiful. I read it twice in a row, just because.

I absolutely love re-tellings of fairy tales and myths and so this book was a natural pick for me. I liked how she combined modern story elements with original mythology, a great winter read

Not The Ordinary, review from Sisterhood Book Club, September 23, 2009 The After Wife is a page turner that is not the ordinary romance, the unexpected action from a visitor from the dark side. The visitor had all the rights to claim what was his and that was Nia the beauty virgin, half human/witch. Nia life was claimed, sold and stamped in blood before she was out of her mother wound. The bad thing about this is that Nia don't a clue of what is going on and why the visitor is watching, protecting, giving her hot dreams and sensual fantasies. The visitor/Demon is so powerful in this story with his plots, twists and turns that it will give you chills of what he does to capture Nia Youngblood heart. But David the young lawyer has her heart also but can't win her soul away from the visitor until they come to blows by blows for the Nia love. David is the first male that stands up to him for Nia soul and almost dies for the one time love that was meant. I recommend this book because the characters is very powerful, funny and they all come off the page at you. The author brings it to you in full effect that have you turning for more...and the ending is no joke...

If I were to make a list of the books I've read more times than I can count, Arm in Arm by Remy Charlip would be near the top. This slim book of art and poetry was one of those books I would try to check out from the library every time I went. I'm surprised I didn't end up being given a copy. In fact, I ended up buying the library's copy many years later when it had been read to the point of falling apart! I later released that copy via BookCrossing and replaced it with another one in better condition. Happily Arm in Arm has come back in print although the cover art has changed to a different collage of drawings from the book. I suspect that a number of people in my generation wanted a copy to share with their children. The subtitle for the book explains what makes it so charming: "A COLLECTION OF CONNECTIONS, ENDLESS TALES, REITERATIONS, AND OTHER ECHOLALIA." Each poem and drawing is like Ouroboros, wrapping in on itself and often times stopping where it started. Then there are the silly jokes both written and drawn that pepper the pages. I really can't do justice to this book's charm and humor without scanning and publishing the entire thing online. So just go get yourself a copy to enjoy!

This was a very detailed and poignant book about a part of history that I know very little about. The detail in the book is quite amazing and it took me a long time to read. Which I enjoy! Excellent writing skill and frankly I was amazed at the depth. It will be hard to go back to novels without that much detail and history.

What was lost was a day of my time. The story line sounds interesting: a young girl who loved to play detective goes missing and a 22 year old male neighbor she has befriended is suspected. She is never found and the young man leaves town never to return. The story picks up 20 or so years later from the point of view of the younger sister of the suspect and a few other people who all work in the shopping mall at which the missing girl had frequently conducted survellience. I was waiting for the "fascinating plot twist," or however it was described in reviews, but that twist managed to be both unlikely and predictable all at the same time. I had to give it two stars, though, because there are definitely far worse books.

Pretty solid collection of fantasy stories, thoughtfully presented as kind of a historical overview of the genre. It starts out with 19th-century stories that are more like proto-fantasy, dealing with elves and fairies and such. Then it moves on to 20th century "high fantasy." Good stuff all around, including some authors I didn't really know.
