A slightly smarter-than-the-average-bear urban paranormal YA. It also mixes things up by making the Sidhe into goblins (I am not entirely clear on fae folklore, but the goblins display all the characteristics of the Fair Folk (fairies/Sidhe/what have you) that come up in other books, so I'm treating this as a case of Our Fairies Are Different. There were quite a few things to like about this book. I'm a sucker for the Big Sister/Abnormal But Brilliant Little Brother trope I first fell in love with in A Wrinkle in Time and it's here in the form of heroine Teagan and her strange but supernaturally insightful/talented little bro Aiden. I thought the beginning of the book where the goblins began appearing was brilliantly creepy. Especially the first appearance of the malevolent and mostly invisible cat-goblin and the fear it inspires in the animals Teagan cared for. A true horror movie moment. What didn't work for me were the generic elements I've read before in too many other paranormal YAs. Like Teagan's one best friend, who is loyal and loving as well as fashionable and boy-crazy. EVERY HEROINE HAS THIS AS THEIR ONLY FRIEND. Why? And the romance didn't work for me at all. Finn is the typical Mysterious Bad Boy. He is also a complete arrogant prick. Plus he has the annoying I LOVE YOU AND WANT YOU BUT CANNOT BE WITH YOU BECAUSE MY SUPERNATURALNESS WILL ONLY BRING HURT OH THE WOE attitude. This fake angst just makes me roll my eyes. Yes, you have a high likelihood of dying young. But I'm pretty confident in the power of love to keep you alive.

I love to look at this book and read the stories and anecdotes--it tells a lot about celebrations in and around Louisiana. The recipes are good, too...a few of them are more time consuming than I'm willing to try, but what I have used are excellent.

A very nice YA book that looks at the issues of growing up in a research station orbiting Jupiter in the rather near future timeline. Good science, good people relations and a different take on the "dealing with a bully in space" issue. Benford is a Ph.D. research scientist and his painting of a research community in space, along with great details on Jupiter, are well-done. As good as any early Heinlein YA.

I got this book from the Sci/Fi and Fantasy book club, but I don't think I would classify it as fantasy. Yet, it seems like alternate history is often classified as such. There are religious things that occur that may put in fantasy. *shrug* This novel covers many, many years as the same souls reincarnate. It's premise is that most of Europe was killed off by the plague, leaving the Asian and Middle Eastern countries to 'discover' America and spread their culture and civilization as Europe did. The Chinese are the first to colonize the Americas but of course from the West coast and not the East. Once again, it's been awhile since I read it, but I do remember finding it fascinating. It's definitely one of those books I would encourage others to read just because it is so different.

Styx and his waist long raven hair do come to the rescue in the end and save darcy from becoming a dog gone breeder and queen of the werewolves in the end. Ahwwww... Tru love.
