It was a frightening story when I first read it as a teenager, and it's no less frightening today.

A computer game (Betrayal at Krondor) based upon a book series... was turned into a book. I can't blame anything that meta that also has wizards named pug and describes the battles in the game in ridiculous, boring book detail. Turning the title around and adding a comma? Brilliant.

I keep this around to someday give away. I also like the idea of it. There are decent tales here--from what I've read--but nothing grabbing like Angela Carter's Bloody Chamber or Poe, even better, and so on.

A delightful and strange adventure story in the vein of The Three Musketeers or The Scarlet Pimpernel, but also an early foreshadow of the Mannerpunk genre which grew out of Peake's Gormenghast books. The well-researched text creates a believable world which is undoubtedly (and delightfully) removed from the modern. Not only does Doyle (of Sherlock Holmes fame) create a fairly accurate portrait of ever-warring Feudal Europe, but at least proposes a psychological type for the soldiers of the time. Of course, to take such a type from (even contemporary) works is a bit of a silly falsehood, and with characteristic British whimsy, Doyle births a cast which seems realistic not despite but because of its deep-seated eccentricity. Of course, it is precisely this method which will grip Peake (in the wake of Chekhov) in his surrealistic works. Though once quite popular, this tale has become somewhat less well-known, perhaps because it is easy to take from it a stance of bravado, militarism, and anglocentrism. Perhaps there will come to us a dissolving of such strong self-identifications with such things that people will no longer feel a need to oppose fictional portrayals, and Doyle and Kipling may return with a grain of salt.

The original--and sadly, probably the best--wholesale rip-off of Lord of the Rings, this is Terry Brooks' first novel. That, taken together with its near-plagiarism, was enough to keep me from giving this book a chance past its first chapter for several years. When I finally overcame my reservations, I found myself rewarded with a study in mediocrity. That'll teach me to take chances. Overall, this is an enjoyable book, and the story--though terribly written--is fairly well told. And if Allanon the Druid should seem to you very much like a certain Grey Pilgrim . . . well, who's to say Tolkien and Brooks didn't just independently come up with nearly the exact same character, mannerisms, and turn of phrase used to describe them some 40 years apart? Don't even get me started about the Ringwraith/Skull-Bearer issue.

Talbot Course: Field Education David Fisher’s book on the 21st Century Pastor is a guide full of wisdom for pastors young and old. It’s a survival guide for those currently serving or about to serve in the pastorate, as the title implies. Fisher uses the ministry model of the apostle Paul to bring to light the core issues of a pastor’s heart, vision, and ministry. Each chapter examines a key principle from Paul’s career and contextualizes it to present day circumstances. By the end of the book, at the least, Fisher leaves his reader a lot more refreshed, re-affirmed, and focused. The reason it doesn't have a higher rating is that it's kind of dated...a lot of stats that he uses are too old....

Not sure how I feel about this book. She has some great points and it's definitely empowering for women frustrated with the male dominated business world. Some of what she says gets very repetitive and she beats the horse of patriarchal system and the disenfranchisement of women a few times too many. Still, I learned a lot.

"The Namesake" is a well-written book that details the lives of a Bengali family, from the parents' time entering the US (and even some time in India) through their son's journeys into his 30's. The author did a great job creating the different voices and personalities, and she does the multiple points of view thing seemlessly (and almost effortlessly). The majority of the book is told from Gogol's (the main character) point of view, but we also get into the minds of his father, his mother, and his wife. Having lived in the US my entire life, and having parents who have also lived in the US their entire lives, it's hard for me to know exactly what immigrants and the children of immigrants think. However, I think that Lahiri captures the struggles perfectly. For example, the main character is very often frustrated by his family and their old-country ways, but he feels a certain duty to them. In his college years, he begins to go by a new name, and he isn't happy when his parents refer to him by his old name OR his new name--the typical college freshman. Lahiri does a great job making him rounded and sympathetic. I also appreciated the small details that Lahiri puts into her story. She doesn't explain everything going on all the time, but she will occassionally throw in random small details that help the reader picture things. My only criticism is that the book just ended; there was no real closure. I guess that's true in real life, but sometimes, I expect more out of a book!

This definitely opened my eyes to even more truths about the meatpacking industry and the overall hurt that mass production for the sake of efficiency and consumerism does to society and the individual. This book certainly outlines effectively how obesity became to be. Still valid today as it was when first written.

It was a little mind racking in the beginning- I was getting jet lag going from France to the US on the west coast, then hopping a plane and going to the east coast. Once things settled down it was very interesting and a great source of knowledge. I will definitely use this book for a great reference. A great learning tool
