"It was clear to him that he had lost something irretrievably that day, and that now he wanted to make up for the loss with minor, inconsequential, and most importantly, belated measures." (p. 264) I'm not sure how I received my first impression of this book when I bought it some six or so years ago, but I always associated it with the kind of tone that one attributes to Dostoevsky, being that it will be a devastating and heartrending trudge of a classic. And while it lives up to that at times, this is something of a schizophrenic novel that occasionally reminded me of A Confederacy of Dunces in its tone. The structure is also interesting with its narrator who's over-dominant and then entirely disappears for lengthy stretches, the mix of humor and the serious, chapter-length excerpts from the novel within the novel, etc. This book goes from the philosophical conversations of Pontius Pilate and the weepy melodrama of penniless love to a giant cat shooting it out with the police. If this sounds to you like some interesting lunacy, then you and this book will get along just fine.

I read this a while ago for my English class, and while I did enjoy it, I found it a little bit boring, and I did not really understand it at first. I couldn't really understand what it was about until the very end. However, I believe this book is an extremely high quality one, with an interesting spin on the time of apartheid in South Africa.

I almost hated to give this a two since Rebecca seems to be a good writer. It is just that living in France seemed to her like she moved to the next county. She became obsessed with the old lady next door and seemed to spend very little time exploring France and the different culture. At least she figured out that wearing white tennis shoes would be weird in France. I bet she was happy to get back home.
