Very good coming of age novel, characters are deep and Dean Bakapolous hits on the right notes when describing the despair of the main character without being too melodramatic.

This novel is similiar to 1984. It's about a utopian society that has gone awry. The Giver is similiar to this genre. Although I believe The Giver has a more hopeful message.

i am teaching it in class, so this is a reread from the 4th grade. i do remember crying at the end, so we'll see how much i have matured emotionally in the last 15 years or so.

It makes you want to travel China the way Ma Jian did. Eye opening, and takes you through the terrain of China in his eyes, heart and shoes.

This was a great mixture of environmentalism and teenage angst! (Maybe a little too much angst to earn four stars, but it would hook your typical teenaged girl.) I loved how this author was able to show both sides of the issue of wolves in Yellowstone through different characters. I was very confused frequently about the status of the main character's relationship and pretty much lost interest in the romance because it was so back and forth. All in all, a good read for a hippie like me!

I read this after being recommended it. I actually once tried to read this before when I was a little younger, and I ended up giving up. Now I've managed to read it cover to cover. I'm going to be honest and say that it's not by any means the best book in the world, but it's not the worst either. I loved the way the story ties up, but I thought the book had a very abrupt ending. Set against the backdrop of Dickensian London, with an array of Dickensian liars and chancers, this book is perfect for that person who wants a taster of the feeling Dickens novel without having to read one. Also if you love death, then this will suit you too haha
