I'll admit that I read this book b/c I hung in some of the same circles as the author in college. I definitely liked it better than his first book, probably because I could relate more to the subject matter (everything is illuminated is largely about jewish culture & history, wheras this book is about a child whose father dies in the world trade center attacks). Both are written in a unique and quirky style, which I respect, although it's not always easy to read.

This book is completely different than the movie. While I liked the movie, it wasn't really a remake of this book. A good take on the werewolf myth!

While I loved being back with Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell, I didn't enjoy "The Language of Bees" as much as I did the books in this series. "The Language of Bees" was a very entertaining read, though it wasn't as intricate a mystery as the other Russell & Holmes books were. Also, the villain didn't seem as dangerous or deadly, which made the ending seem all the more out of joint. I also though that Laurie King didn't spend much time on the relationship between Mary and Holmes; they were barely together throughout the book. I was disappointed by the cliffhanger ending which I felt could have been tidied up a bit better. I still don't understand why King chose a cliffhanger as an ending for "The Language of Bees" when she ended the other Russell & Holmes books properly; but overall I still enjoyed reading "The Language of Bees."

This book is laugh out loud funny in some parts in the beginning which was welcome because I was looking for a light-hearted read. As the book went on, it got kind of boring and tedious. I liked it though. It was a cute book all in all. If you would like to borrow it, let me know. I have it out to a friend right now.

I enjoyed this book also but Chains was better. Forge was written by the boy character, Curzon's, point of view instead of the girl. This takes place a Valley Forge at the time the war started to really turn around. Sometimes it's difficult to understand such difficult lives and times. I look forward to the last book in this series and wish it was going to be available soon. I am guessing next year sometime.

A very well written piece with an interesting POV perspective; first person from two different protagonists. This is especially entertaining here, in a very "Holmes Watson" way, as one of the characters is a rather haughty, womanizing, wine-loving "ambassador" and member of the Pathfinders, a group of knowledge seeking adventurers in the Paizo gaming world of Golarion. Please don't let the fact that this is a game oriented novel dissuade you from picking it up. The writing and characterization are tight, and the plot twists are well done. The only down side I have to lay down about this wonderful tale, and the only reason I didn't give it the full five stars, is the author's propensity to start a chapter in the middle, then backfill a page or two to catch up to where he started. It works, but I feel that it is a tool too often used in this single novel. That said, I have the highest recommendations for the book, and will be picking up the sequel, Master of Demons, as soon as I can get my hands on a copy... Well done! Disclaimer: I met Dave Gross at Gencon 2011, and the fact that he is a great guy may have influenced this review... ;-)
