The one where brittle-boned, nimble-brained Miles flunks the military academy entrance exam and then accidentally starts a mercenary army. There's a lot to like here -- Miles is appealing, and I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of fantasy elements (Barrayar, with its counts and daggers and honor code) with science-fictional elements (many well-imagined details on the problems of space travel). I especially liked the clash between Betan and Barrayaran values. ("The punishment is to be quartered." "But ... that would kill him!") Unfortunately, about halfway through the book, I suddenly thought, "Hey, this is essentially Hornblower In Space," and I'm afraid Miles suffers badly by comparison to Hornblower. I'm still interested in reading more of the series, but I didn't instantly fall in love with this as I'd expected.

This Jenny Hann does heartbreak, heartfail and HEA! Good stories some repetition between books, but it's tolerable. One series where I can say that between the original and sequel(s) I wasn't disappointed.

This is one of the longest Ethshar books that Watt-Evans have ever created (I think), and thats certainly how it feels...long. Its not bad, mind you, its very much like the other Ethshar books, filled with magic, action and great worldbuilding. If you love Ethshar, then you'll love this book too... however, a little predictable!
