I absolutely love these books. I may even purchase them once all four have been released. Cassiel is a very interesting character. She begins the series as a very unemotional, very removed character, and she becomes more and more human as the books go on. She is absolutely determined to find a better way to save the world--which is a human trait, oddly enough.\ And now I have to wait 11 months for the conclusion. It seems so far away!

Overall I liked this book. I think she articulated well some ideas I had buried in my brain somewhere but didn't know quite how to express. I hadn't ever thought about the fact that the household used to be a productive entity and now it is almost completely consumptive, and I think it is absolutely true that the more we can move back toward producing for ourselves and focusing on our own families and households, the less we are dependent on the outside world to meet our needs and generally the happier we are. Still, I think that the radical homemaker way of life was pretty idealized and many of the problems with it are not addressed. While the moms she interviewed all seemed happy and their marriages were great, I can't imagine that that lifestyle wouldn't be lonely and isolating for some women. I feel isolated as a stay at home mom in a busy neighborhood. I don't think I have the patience to homeschool my kids. I also think that it is certainly no coincidence that most of her successful families had been given/loaned land or money by family members. Going out and buying 40 acres outright so we can quit our day jobs and live off $30k a year comfortably just not possible for a lot of us. I also don't think she considered how difficult it would be to give up health care for a lot of families, particularly if they have members with chronic illnesses like diabetes. Still, lots to like, and an interesting read!

Everyone’s heard of Malice, but hardly anyone has actually seen it: a comic about a horrifying world of tricks and traps, overseen by the sinister master of ceremonies, Tall Jake. The story goes that the kids who go through Tall Jake’s deadly trials are real kids, who’ve disappeared from the real world and turned up in the comic. But it’s just an urban legend, right? Seth and Kady think so. Until their friend Luke tells them that he’s found a copy of Malice, and the next day he disappears without trace. Seth and Kady investigate, and in doing so, they discover the awful truth. The legends are true. Malice is real.

Very interesting and heart touching story, but ends with far too many loose ends.

Impetuous, quick tempered Evvy is a snarly bramble patch girl that loves her rocks and a small handful of meat bodies & Luvo, the heart of a mountain. Shhhhh! Don't say meat bodies. It's not nice. In fact, it's rude to call people meat bodies. How does everyone everyone remember all the rules about what's right and wrong all the time?!?! Evvy's attention is absorbed by a wide variety of stones, the element of her magic, but her temper is more like whipping flames and always getting her into trouble. You know, forgetting her manners and the never ending rules. It's not her fault that other people can't use the strength of stones like she can. As punishment and a traveling lesson, Evvy sails to the islands with Rosethorne, Luvo & Myrrhtide. She can't stand being on a ship, traveling over endless water and not being able to touch the earth. Soon enough, Evvy finds herself in more than enough trouble & adventure with a pair of lively melting stones and helping troublesome meat bodies-er island people.

I think CivilWarLand in Bad Decline was the first set of short stories I have ever read. And George Saunders wowed me with these. I was just coming into reading for fun when I read these stories and they were so modern - the weird stories and the writing - i had never read anything like them before and instantly loved them.

I thought this was going to be a “Poisonwood Bible” (which I loved) wannabe but Meldrum has her own style. I especially enjoyed reading about the family as individuals and their vastly different worlds from Michigan to West Africa. I guess I just like contemporary fiction.

Maybe it was lying on a beach in Majorca and having a great holiday as I read this book that swung my mood, but I really loved it. It is very blokey but Elsie Roundbottom is such a great strong female character that I was won over. I really liked It's Cold Outside, which I think followed You Are Here, and it was a lot less Blokey, but this was great. Never been to Crete but would like to having read about some wonderfully described places here - particularly on the Scooter trek with Elsie and Dave (my fave part of the book). In fact the only bit I did not really like was the cover - would have preferred a beach scene and scooters!!
