Loved it. Jazz age Paris. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Stein.

Sokal puts it quite nicely: des impostures intellectuelles. Though, I wouldn't like to be conceded; there is much in there that makes good sense and that is worth remembering.

A quick and easy guide to teaching yourself and your baby sign language. Signs include hungry, pain, milk, hug, and playtime. I would recommend this to any parent interested in using signlanguage to communicate with their baby as most of the signs are intuitive and therefore easy to remember.

Neverwhere is my favorite Gaiman book. It may have something to do with how I was introduced to it - my roommate and I read it, chapter by chapter, as a "bedtime story" to our downstairs neighbors over a semester our sophomore year of college. A story of a normal guy who stumbles into an unreal world below the streets of London, Neverwhere is magical and a great read.

Bisher das beste Buch dieser Reihe, da aber bei weitem nicht an die Troubleshooter ran kommt.

The one crazy guy that became the source of the Smithsonian and the National Observatory and discovered that Antarctica was a continent. He also was the expedition that solidified an acceptance of government-funded science. The writing of the book is way better than my review.

What a delightful find this one was! Totally expected run-of-the-mill chicklit, and it was an exquisitely written gem! Not perfect in the plotting, but I highlighted passage after passage of beautiful prose. Our book club loved it--average ranking 8/10. Can't understand why general customer ratings are lower--maybe too many WERE expecting something more predictable. (The cover doesn't help...) Intriguing story that initially alternates between the reflections of a young, female war correspondent working for Edward Murrow and broadcasting reports of the London Blitz via radio AND the denizens of a small Cape Cod town who wonder if war will be declared--or if the Germans will show up off the coast. Each character is so rich and complex. A midlife romance is downright hot. There's humor and pathos. Scenes about the Blitz made you feel like you were reading a movie. And the character's journey to follow displaced refugees fleeing the concentration camps was a unique twist on what we all have read over and over again. We know what's to come--but most of us have not really delved into the diaspora that preceded it. Some predictable outcomes but with unpredictable ways of getting there...and as the author starts to spend more time with the journalist and less with the town, I think the book lost some of its appeal. Indeed the last third is a bit redundant. But never a waste of time to read--and its ambition, while not flawlessly executed, is to be admired. Definitely one that I would recommend.

Feist has been hit and miss the last 5-6 years for me, but I could see something more to my liking in this one. He went back to the roots, i.e. storyline in our beloved Crydee, ConDoin people as guest stars, Crydee under siege, the Kingdom is imperiled etc. On the other hand, there are many redundancies is this book, particularly when relating events in the past, and it is a little annoying after a while. For exemple, I think I read 3 times the story about how Pug did a stand between Kesh and Kingdom during the Serpent war, and how that destroyed his relationship with the Crown. Or twice we get the explanation why the Magician's tower in Crydee was named that way. Thankfully this kind of stuff happens only in the first 100 pages or so. In addition, the book is also too short. When I look back at books such as Prince of the Blood, Silverthorn, Magician, King's buccaneer, all of the first 15 books or so.... you can see there is not much in this one. The next book in the serie will continue this story where it left off, but I bet there will be explanations again about the previous books, events, etc, something he wouldn't need to do if he was making a bigger first book and write a two-book serie instead of a trilogy, which would probably greatly improve this book. Anyway, overall it's a better book than his previous one "At the Gate of Darkness". But wait for the pocket book in my opinion, or even better, get it at the library. Maybe if less people buy his books he would think about writing a better one that people would actually be more inclined to buy.
