Atwood makes me uncomfortable, because I always find myself relating too much to the characters - or if not to the characters at least what they're feeling. I can understand the motivation to almost everything that Marian did and felt. And given when this book was written, I was surprised it didn't come off as dated - all the social psychologists in the world would likely be shocked to discover that the "quarter age" crisis they so aptly ascribed to my generation a few years ago, is summarized nicely in a book from the late 60s - the feeling of being out of school and trapped in the first job - the feeling of not quite knowing what you want from yourself or your relationships with others. Being grown up and not quite ready to face it. While this doesn't quite reach the level of Cat's Eye (my favorite), it's a close second. It's relevant, relateable, disturbing, and uses language beautifully. I have a few issues with how heavy-handed she gets in the Fruedian symbolism as it pertains to parents and childhood trauma, but Atwood was self-aware enough to make fun of that to an extent in her characatures of grad students to tried to find a deeper meaning when there wasn't one.

I've intended to read more of this long overdue update to Revolting Librarians, but my boss keeps hiding it in her office. A definite must-have for all librarians of left-leaning, radical bent.

It was real...but at the same time imaginary...just like the personalities of the characters.

For years before reading this book I hated it. I hated it so much. I think at least half of my zines have somewhere the line "Fuck you Coupland" at least once in some rant. My hatred of him was immense, seriously. For example if I had been driving my car and I had seen him I would have run him over. Of course like any good hatred I only had superficial reasons for hating him, I had never read his work, I only saw the catchy looking books and saw them as a disgusting marketing device. And of course there is the name of this book, and the fact that I hated the whole Generation X thing that in the 90's seemed to be thrown about all the time. But then I read the book, and I found I actually really really liked the book, and that I didn't hate Douglas Coupland and that I had been wrong in my irrational hatred. Oh well. I guess I'm sorry for all the times I told you to go fuck yourself in my zine.

Part travelogue, part cultural study, part historical analysis, this book was the next step I took from my disappointing encounter with Memoirs of a Geisha to find more information about the modern day geisha. A little on the scholarly side but charming enough to keep you interested.

Contains quite possibly the funniest line ever to be put in print! "The cheerleaders in my groin were setting up fundraising car washes to finance a field trip to his groin." Totally lame ending, though.
