I really enjoyed this second in the Aurelia series once I got into it. It was a little slow in starting and I was trying to remember the characters. But after a few chapters I had a hard time putting it down. The assassination attempts on princess Aurelia are not finished after the first book - this second has many close calls with death and the ever present mystery of who is really behind it all.

The book Just Don’t Fall by Josh Sundquist is an inspiring true story about a man who had his leg amputated at the age of 9. His leg was amputated because he had a cancer that was spreading through his leg so rapidly that that was the only way to save his life. Josh was just a normal 9yr old who loved soccer. He really wanted to play soccer but once he got his leg amputated that dream was over. Instead of living the rest of his life in self pity he decided to do something with his life. Instead of giving up on life Josh became a professional one legged skier. This book shows what hard work and determination can do. The author writes very well. He really makes you feel as if you are there going though these difficult times with him. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys well written inspiring stories. The book is an easy read and would be appropriate for all ages.

World-building takes dedication, and Walter Moers' Zamonia series is an impressive world. Almost every other page of The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear (the first book in the series) describes a new, bizarre creature. The 703 pages are a bit daunting, and it took me several tries to get past the first 60 (I was only 9, though). When I did succeed, I can remember reading the last page and thinking,"Wow!" The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear does what it says on the tin--it follows the first 13 1/2 lives of Bluebear. Each life is like an episode with a new set of circumstances, secondary characters, and outward goals. Two of my favourite lives are: Life Number 11, where Bluebear is trying to find a way through a bollogg's brain (bolloggs have the power to remove their heads and live--this head appears to have been left behind on the edge of the Demerara Desert...) with the help of a 'bad' idea and the hindrance of insanity, and Life Number 2, in which Bluebear tries to fit in with some hobgoblins (panic-loving creatures created when a will-o-the-wisp comes into contact with Zamonia graveyard gas). What works: Although each life is very different, Bluebear has the same inner goal throughout the story--to find a place where he belongs--which helps concrete the plot. The creativity is mind-blowing, and the rich story really gives you an idea of what living in Zamonia would be like. What I would change: There are a lot of details. While these details are absolutely fascinating and mostly important, there are parts where they slowed the story down and made me want to skim ahead to where the action started again. Better than mediocre, not Pulitzer quality. I love the idea of death, war, fate, time, and nature being jobs that mortal people do. Piers Anthony is clever and imaginative. This series is great, if you stop at the first five. Years after these, Mr. Anthony wrote two more about Good and Evil, and they were nowhere near as good as the first.

This is a fun, cute novelette available in ebook format for only $0.99. (At the time of this review) The writing and editing were top notch. I breezed through this story in less than two hours. I very much enjoyed Ms. Olinger's scenes in heaven - so funny! If you like chick lit or fluffy, fun romances, pick this one up. You'll be glad you did. ~ Jenna

Gary writes in a way that allows me to feel his compassion, his regret and his love. Beyond the band and the 80's, he writes of the importance of strong family relationships. For example, his "muse" gives him a book. (p.169) "She gave me a gift. I wanted to tell my two rivals but kept it a secret between us. It was a book. I read it as though she were reading it to me. It slipped beneath my skin and the words bubbled up inside, percolating through me. I would send it back in a song." Tony's voice was so strong that his producer made him sing lying down during a recording session. Still too strong, so he covered him with a Turkish rug. (p. 156) Gary states that the quest for being accepted among entertainers is a fruitless endeavor (p. 232) "Unfortunately, this world has inner sanctums within inner sanctums, and threading your way through the temple of celebrity while holding on to your trousers of self-respect is nigh impossible. He considers Through the Barricades the "best piece of music we would ever make." (p. 243) He had a difficult time letting the band take it. He had created it and wanted to control every aspect. Finally, he walked around town while Tony sang. "Tony gave the most incredible vocal he'd ever sung, and claimed the song not only for himself, but for the whole band." The creative process is tricky. You know what it can be in your head, but the unveiling is difficult. (p. 173)In my head is how it could sound with the band playing, but as it's impossible to relay with just one instrument and a voice, I attempted to describe it. . . it's always the same experience: as if I were summoning the courage to tell someone for the first time that I loved them, desperately hoping that they felt the same way too." Regarding Gary's son, Finlay, he writes (p. 294)". . . building a one-to-one relationship gives me more joy than anything I've done before."

So it took me almost 6 months to get through this book. And I'm not a slow reader. The first 400 of 600 pages are so boring. They set up the climax of the book but I just could not get through it. Then when I got to the exciting part it really wasn't worth all that time. The ending was awful too. I'm guessing its a set-up for the next book (which you probably couldn't pay me to read) but come on. What a waste of time.

Wow! A little (ok, a lot) depressing. Especially the first 3 chapters but the concepts are so thought-provoking. Some of the ideas may be a little too revolutionary for some but the more I read, the more they resonate. Second & third parts were a bit more hopeful with concrete ideas of things to do. I liked that.
