After buying the first book and reading it, I had to read this one. It was exceptional and did not take me long to adjust to new characters. I love how old characters were weaved into the story, some of them playing major, major roles. Like the last one, the twists kept me hooked and I enjoyed reading about the characters.

I have seen this book compared to Harry Potter and I thought I would enjoy it. I read some of the reviews, both positive and negative and thought it couldn't be as bad as the negative reviews made it seem. Well, it was. Many other reviewers have said it better than me as to why this book was so bad. Believe them. The book was depressing. The story should have been great and the basic premise and storyline would have been great if there had been even the slightest bit of joy anywhere in the book. However, the attitude of the main character ruined the book.

This is no standard "magic sword" High Fantasy book. Complex characters and plotlines abound. Martin is an excellent writer that keeps you interested and personally vested in the characters. The books are low on their over-use of magic as a plot device. Rather, in this volume Martin focuses more on political intrigue and the myriad plots of characters wishing to advance their own plans. These books are in the same category as Tolkien. Highly Recommended for fans of the genre and new-comers alike.

I really wanted to give the book just 2 1/2 stars. It was not compelling reading, but it was exactly what I thought it would be. I like how Meg Cabot starts each chapter with a fun side note, in this book it was "Lizzie Nichol's Wedding Gown Guide" or something like that. Those were cute to read, and hinted at some theme in the subsequent chapter. For the most part, though, it was just your standard predictable chick-lit. A vacation for the brain.

This book details the events of the CIA's operation to overthrow Guatamalan president Arbenz. This analysis uses declassified government documents collected which provides an interesting perspective of what CIA and the executive branch believed covert operations could produce in the 50's and 60's. It is disappointing that the US promoted an operation that goes against international law, helped provide the inaccurate perceptions of covert action leading to future blunders in Cuba and Vietnam, and the resulting collaspe of the Guatamalan government for years to come. In the end, it was all for nothing, a sad conclusion that hopefully our nation has learned from.

Well, ok. I'm reading this book now, but I read it a few years back when I was teaching Creative Writing at Pitt. It's different for me now, just because I'm not completely focusing on the subtelties of the language or the way the stories are being told. What still stands out to me are the characters. This collection brings forth the stories of those pretty much maligned by society, mainly inner-city kids in New York. Their stories are heartbreaking and rich and tough. "Proper Library" is one of my favorites. When I taught it at Pitt, my students were quick to trash it; they felt they could not relate. But we all kind of dug into it by challenging each of our own preconceived notions and prejudices, and in the end, most if not all the class thanked me for introducing this book to them.
