For what it's worth, I started this as an audiobook and found it almost unbearably twee and depressing. But the premise still appealed to me, and I liked the character of Alice, so I picked up a hard copy - and lo and behold, I had a page-turner on my hands. I loved this book. It swept me up, it asked (and answered) questions about fictional magic I didn't even know I had, it built a world so deliciously perilous that I actually had to put the book down during the really scary parts and go do some deep breathing and eat some gummy bears for courage. It's rare that I come back to a GoodReads review and add a star. Usually I glance at a review months or years later and think, huh, I barely even remember that book now. I better knock off a star or two. But I gave The Magicians four stars partly because I have a feeling I might be coming back later to give it the full complement. It's the kind of book that sticks with you and gets better the more you think about it. I finished it a week ago, and I'm still having vivid dreams about Fillory and friends.

This was another Kindle read for me. I started it back in April, but didn't have a whole lot of spare time to pick it up again until this past week. While it did a fairly good job of holding my interest, I am not a big fan of this book. First of all, it's disgusting in ways that it does not need to be disgusting. I feel like the author may have been aiming for some sort of shock reaction out of the reader by being so graphic/disturbing. Without being specific, I just really think that a lot of the adult "themes" that the author included were just not necessary and that maybe the book would have been better without them. Secondly, many parts of the plot are so unbelievable that it's almost laughably ridiculous. I like thrillers, but I need to be able to believe that such events could take place for me to truly be entranced. The ghosts and what happens with the ending only added to the absurdity of it for me. So, it's a decent read as long as you don't mind absurd, gross, and lewd details.

This reminds me of "Lost.". Always the thrill of getting to the end and finding answers. Then having more questions. Raises more questions than answers Not sure if I will keep reading this series. I eventually gave up watching Lost after a couple seasons. Too frustrating.

I'm not impressed. Spoiler's ahead..... Madison dies her prom night, but she steals an amulet off her killer, which somehow keeps her halfway alive. The amulet gives her a body. The Reaper she stole the amulet off of is now after her. Throw in a semi-love interest, a guardian angel, a dark reaper, a light reaper, timekeepers, etc. and you've got what would seem to be an interesting story. And the story is okay, but there is a disconnect (imo) with this author's writing. It's really matter of fact, the things I wanted to know a little more about were left out, the things I didn't care as much about she spent forever on. For such a short little book, it got tedious. This book did not bring me out of my book slump. Will I read #2??? Good question, maybe if it falls in my lap. I'm not going to go out of my way to buy it, it will definitely be a library read. Ramble over. 2.5 stars
