Ughh...don't read anything by E.L. Konigsburg. Not a very good book. Then again, no book I've read by Konigsburg was ever that good. Only reason I read this was because of Reading Olympics.

This post-apocalyptic tale, while promising at the outset, is shot through with an overall pessimistic view of human nature. The redeeming qualities of the characters (and indeed, the storyline itself) are few and far between. The reader is left with the impression that the story's conclusion mirrored the author's view of life: that when there is a resolution, it is often a bitter pill to swallow.

1984 is George Orwell's view of a completely controlled, limited government. In Oceania, Winston Smith doubts the regulations that have been set on him by Big Brother and the Party. There's telescreens and secret microphones made to monitor everyone, wherever they are. There's also thought crime, punishable by mysterious death by the Though Police. Posters are plastered everywhere with the words "Big Brother Is Watching You" to spite fear and anxiety in the citizens of Oceania. In this society, people who think against the Party are eliminated as well as intelligent or suspicious people. In an effort to overrule the party , Winston aims to meet someone else willing to rebel with him. Once this happens, the two of them begin to seek ways to become active anti-Party members. I enjoyed this book mostly because of the ideas and questions Orwell posed. This made me consider today's society's goals and actions and compare them to the characters in the book. In this book, humanity is brainwashed into thinking that the government is savior and superior. Blindly following their leaders, the people of Oceania work to destroy and recreate history. Books are rewritten and images are recreates in order for people to forget events that happened. There is an ongoing war that is supposedly necessary in order for peace to remain. Orwell really impressed me and certainly created an image of a dystopian society today. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in a book with multiple social and political frontiers and implemented themes of power and limits of a society.

Dead Spell is the perfect book if you’re looking for a quick read. At just 197 pages of fast flowing spookiness, I finished it in just a couple of evenings. I really enjoyed the main characters, Brea and Harmony and their boyfriends, Jaxon and Adam and I loved reading about the girls lifelong friendship. Both girls were struggling with different aspects of their life and helping each other through with a little help from the boys. Adam, Harmony’s boyfriend was such a great guy. He was the kind of boyfriend any girl would want - sensitive, caring and loving and I really wished that Harmony would have trusted him more. I did like Jaxon, but it took me quite a while to warm to him. Reading about Tom, the ghost who was haunting Harmony and making her do things to harm herself was really creepy. With her mother too ill to care, Harmony tried to deal with Tom’s ghost on her own, but things have been getting way out of hand and Brea is drawn in, which puts her in Tom’s spotlight too. Some of the things Belinda Frisch came up with for Tom to do to the girls was really freaky and I was quite jumpy about them for a while after putting the book down, but I totally love it when that happens because if I’m reading about spooky stuff I want to feel spooked! The plot was intriguing, with lots of twists and turns and I didn’t guess the ending so it was a nice surprise … well, maybe not so nice, but still great. I would definitely recommend this book to older teens and adult readers. The storyline deals with some pretty adult themes like drugs, suicide, mental illness and sex so I don’t think the book is suitable for younger teens.

A great premise for anyone who grew up in the world of the Hardy Boys, the Three Investigators, and above all, Encyclopedia Brown: EB grows up, faces reality! I was actually excited enough at the prospect that I picked up a couple of old EBs to brush up on my childhood memories. Big mistake! BH is more a vehicle for Mr. Russel to slather on his particular obsessions onto Idaville as well as throw in an annoying amout of kid book and noir allusions and namechecks. Bugs Meany a evil dot com magnate? Mrs. Brown bewailing how Chief Brown "poodled her pooper?" Sigh.

What a beautiful childrens book with a wonderful storyline teaching children a lesson many grown-ups would do well to learn. Beautifully illustrated, this story centers around a little pot that is continually being emptied, poured out, and refilled. Great word picture for opening a child's mind to the concept of 'giving oneself away'. Children will identify with the feelings of loss each time the little pot is emptied and rejoice as it becomes filled again. A great story time book that can be read and reread again to help children learn to look beyond what they may loose and rejoice the hope of what God plans to fill them with.

Interesting exploration into the psychological effects of their misadventures. I can't stand Carl, though.
