This novel gets off to a great start and the questions it explores - -how best to preserve the native flora and fauna of California's Channel Islands -- are interesting and complicated. But the characters gradually devolve into stereotypes and the novel becomes too melodramatic.

Siahla som po tejto knihe, pretože som z každej strany počúvala, aká je dobrá. Neoľutovala som. Najskôr sa to pomaly rozbiehalo, ale o to viac som hltala strany, keď sa dej rozvinul Bolo zaujímavé sledovať ako sa Rose počas knihy menila, stala sa zodpovednejšou, hlavne kvôli Lisse :) Knihe som dala štyri hviezdičky iba pretože, viem, že ďalšie knihy sú lepšie :)Jednoznačne kniha, ktorú treba mať vo svojej zbierke :).

This was a fun book to read as well as an eye opener as to what life was like at that time in the West. She did a good job at keeping the book going at a good pace. I had a very had time putting it down once I started.

I really liked this! I think the circumstances that Kaje created for Mac were imaginative and well-explained, and totally connected Mac's personality and his decisions about staying in the closet and connected with his daughter. There are stories about saintly relatives coming out of the woodwork to help raise kids, but neither Mac nor Tony have that option. Tony has to deal with the alcoholic mother of a good friend's son, and Mac has to depend on an inflexibly fundamentalist cousin to help raise his daughter. Yet both men are determined to make a difference in a child's life, and are willing to sacrifice something to do it. The murder mystery story was well told, and created a great framework for the development of Mac and Tony's relationship. Given the realities of both their situations (Tony's need for a genuine connection with a loyal partner, and Mac's need for time to develop some new strategies to deal with his daughter and his job), made the HFN ending feel right, instead of a shortcut. If there is a sequel, great, but this story stands well on its own.
