I love Steve Martin's comedy, and I moderately enjoyed his novel Shopgirl. He's a talented writer when it comes to the actual prose, but I found this novel difficult to get into or even care about. First of all, the main character (Lacey Yeager) is hardly likeable and terribly hard to identify with. I just didn't care about her. In fact, I just didn't care period. She's a self-serving narcissist who really doesn't have many redeeming qualities other than the fact that nearly every heterosexual man she meets wants to sleep with her. (She is not, by the way, a cardboard character; just seriously dull.) The best thing about this book is that it delves deeply into the pretentiousness of the art world of New York City. If that's what you're looking for, the book is for you. But if you're looking for a novel with captivating characters that you might care deeply about, I wouldn't recommend it. Incidentally, I listened to the unabridged audiobook version of this novel, narrated by the actor Campbell Scott. He does a wonderful job, deadpanning his entire way through. (In some ways, I realize that Scott and Martin have similar-sounding voices.)

This was read to me, in its entirety, on my birthday six years ago (still one of my best memories). To be honest, I fell asleep for some parts (I've since reread the book), but this made me want to read everything Calvino has ever written. Whenever I'm between books and can't decide what to read next, I carry this around and read a few chapters at random.

A few very funny moments interspersed with (too many) faux-reconstructed memories that tried a little too hard to be funny. I think her absurdist brand of humor comes across best on screen, and I live for her Daily Show segments––that's why I picked this up in the first place. Those segments are her crowning jewel as a comedian, and it's just not the same on the page, unfortunately. I almost gave this two stars, but I like her too much, so I'm totally doing the three-star goodreads pity-review thing. In my eyes, she's still the best fucking member of the "best fucking news team" on earth, though.

If you’re looking for a short, hot read with lots of romance and man-on-man action, this novella may be for you. The whole concept of 1NightStand, an agency with a mysterious owner who arranges for – one night stands - is fun and weaves a nice thread between the otherwise unconnected stories published in this series. ‘Bear It All’ was the first one I read, but it won’t be the last! Travis is desperate for a strong partner who isn’t out to make him his sub or otherwise abuse him. He may look like a kid, but he’s 25, has just passed the bar exam and treats himself to a holiday, hoping to find more than a fling. His need for acceptance is touching, as is his yearning for love. While his expectation to find it by arranging, essentially, for a hook up is definitely unrealistic, the way his encounter with John unfolds has a touch of fairy tale to it. And as such I enjoyed reading it a lot. John has a different problem. He has lost a lover, and with that, his love of life. He realizes he’ll need a kick start and books a one night stand for his vacation. His shock and surprise at meeting Travis are palpable, his feelings about having been tricked had me doubt this could even go anywhere. The more I saw of John, though, the more I got to like him. He may be a wounded knight in shining armor, but he is nonetheless exactly who Travis needs. If you like hot men with significant emotional issues, exotic holiday settings and a few ups and downs as new lovers get to know each other, you might like reading about this sensuous, and very erotic dream. Philosophically sophisticated, extremely challenging, and written in beautiful prose. She had a towering intellect and excellent style to boot. Imagine a collaboration between James Joyce, Herman Melville, and Carson McCullers; that is the best preview I can give. I wish I could be more helpful in explaining why everyone who writes fiction or thinks about fiction should read this book, but this would be like explaining why a particular mountaineer should climb a particular mountain--and this is a mountain of a book.

--- some of these short stories affected long after i stopped reading. i would read one before going to bed, and after i finished hem all, i felt like i had a lot of frustration and ire that were swimming inside of me. i felt immensely confused and satisfaction came only after re-reading some of the stories to see why i couldn't get to sleep for days after finishing the book in it's entirety. there is definitely something in most of those stories that really make me eager to read more about all of those characters. even some of them cut off in that annoying way that resembles the panic of leaving the final note unplayed, it was still a good read at the time. ---
