I read this book because I like Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael books so much and was hoping for another medieval-themed mystery series. I liked this book OK, but not as much as the Brother Cadfael series. Perhaps, I should try the next in the series? What does everyone think? One thing: The Brother Cadfael books have maps. This one did not although there was a fair amount of "locational writing" --- as in "to the east" and "to the west" and the "ABC Highroad" and the "River XYZ". I think that maps are always orienting when there is this kind of writing.

This book was a great insight into the life of a British solider. It was written very well and really increased my admiration for what the armed forces do. I unfortunately discovered the glossary when I had finished the book, which would have been helpful to know about before, as there are a lot of acronyms. Hennessey keeps the pace moving and writes some great descriptions of characters; his observations of people, systems and cultures are very interesting. All the way through, though, I was waiting for him to reflect on how it feels to have killed people, and he didn't - for a book that describes the making of a soldier, right from the start, this seemed lacking to me. I also found his reasons for joining the army a little unclear, for someone who is clearly so intelligent and would have had many career options available to him. I also wanted to hear his opinions about the wars that he fought in, whether they were justified or not. Occasional comments seemed slightly sceptical, but that was as much as was included; then again, perhaps this is a reflection of the role of the soldier, which is not one to question but to follow. All in all, a really good read.

Not as good as American Gods, and I think the comparison is inevitable, but still a good read.

2.5 A short short short story that had potential enough to be longer. I liked the plot. I liked the brothers...would love a short about them and their debauchery :) (view spoiler) Juliette's mother told her that in the marriage bed, "Feigning interest in his passion is encouraged, though a woman will have to hide her instinctual disgust. She looks her husband up and down, "She seemed to have misplaced her instinctual disgust. But for now. Totally worth the 64 cents I paid! (Love borders coupons!) Right now it's $.99 for kobo

I bought this book with my last €15 i had in the whole world last year sometime. I bought it for two reasosns. Firstly, it was a big book that i hoped would cover me untill i either found some money to buy a new book or got a job. Secondly, the title described quite well the feeling i had at 5 min to closing time in my bookshop. So without further joke we dive deep into this tome. This book weighs about one and a half kilos and can be used as paper weight if its enormous page count terrifies you. heh.. Dispite its huge size the book dosnt have a small army of chareters whos names you must commit to memory. Which is brillent for someone like me. I once forgot a girl id been talking to for three weeks name and had to ask.... That story dosnt have a happy ending... The story is based on true events, which lead me to belive for part of the book thta giant polar bears were common place in the victorian north pole. Which just goes to show how well written and reseached this book is. The book conveys a sence of dread that the chareters feel in this hostile frozen desert. What i learned from this book ...That the british wanted to transport convics to the north pole to dig for coal.

Truth be told, I didn't get through the second chapter. The characters were whiny and lame. I couldn't stand it!
