I admit it, I’m a sucker for a big fat historical fiction romance. I read and enjoyed Donnelly’s A Gathering Light and thought The Tea Rose , to which this is a sequel, was a fun, guilty pleasure. This is much the same, although at times it falls into the clichéd trappings of a bodice-ripper. Lecherous suitors! Secret pregnancies! Murder! The heroines name is…groan…India Jones. Did I mention she’s a doctor? The historical settings and details were intriguing. Donnelly did a lot of research on turn of the century medicine, the first pioneering female physicians, and the right to vote movement. The book takes a turn for the worse when the action leaves the slums of London to South Africa, but all in all, it was a decent read and good escapism.

Gordon knew I would like this book. I really do. Some of the Balthazar section is weird, but I've already quoted this very irreverent book in church.

I stopped reading this book pretty early on. It seems like it was primarily written for 15-year-olds, which is, by no coincidence, how old I was when it was published. I'm sure that it was marketed to 15 year old me and some part of my brain put it down as, "You should probably read this book some day." But don't read it when you're 30 and more cynical than your 15 year old self. That said, stories of people standing up for what they believe in can be encouraging. What is less encouraging is the attitude that everybody who is not a Christian must be some terrorist, bent on destroying Christianity. Just because someone is a Muslim or a Communist doesn't make them anti-Christian. The "Us Vs. Them" attitude of this book turned me away early on. One of my first few Sherlock Holmes books. I found it very interesting. The relationship between Holmes and Watson is very familial. The quest to find diamonds and return it to its righful owner sends the two on a dangerous excursion halfway around the world.

Fun and interesting story, but the worst grammar and structure ever! His poor writing skills were very distracting from the story.

I avoided reading this book for a long time because I thought I would be disappointed... but it turned out to be better than anything I've ever read. It's amazing, it's real, and it's beautifully written. Highly, highly recommended.

This book reminded me of the Poison Study, which is of course a good thing. I did think it got a little slow in the middle, when it was very obvious to the reader how she should read her dragon dial, or what was causing her dragon to disappear. But overall a good read, and I think I will read the sequel.

Like Battlestar Galactica on TV, people shouldn't be turned off by this book's genre. It's a gripping, character driven story that's great from start to finish. The plot is intricate and detailed. The character's are incredibly well developed. The world is imaginitave and avoids any generic fantasy attribute. There's barely any magic and none of the usual monsters. It's written for adults and Martin isn't afraid to write about any topic. I love every book in this series. I only wish I could find the original cover art work for the thumbnail. NOT for the squemish.

Really enjoyed this. This is a book about the French Revolution through the eyes of Madame Tussaud, and not her life story. I had no idea she played such an important role in the Revolution. Her family's wax museum was as much of a source for news as the newspapers, so the displays in the museum were changed as quickly as power shifted in France. She had close relationships with the royal family, the Royalists, as well as the Revolutionists. Well written, but I gave it four stars instead of five because I sometimes felt a little bogged down in the politics. This was the first book I read on my iPad. I really thought I'd miss the paper and the action of turning the pages, but I did not. In fact, I found the instant dictionary in Kindle to be very useful for translating the few French words that came up that I didn't understand. I also loved being able to instantly see a photo of any castle, street, portrait, etc mentioned in the book.
