Light, yet informative read covering the interrelationship between cells, germs, viruses, bacteria, genetics, and disease, and how we've evolved as humans with varied environmental sensitivities. Good coverage regarding how evolution works along with some clarification about general assumptions. Some cutting edge research is introduced as well as a gentle introduction to some of the ongoing debates in the scientific community. Fun, educational, and practical. I read this one quickly. For an overall sense of human adaptability and luck, this one made me appreciate the body and immune system in a new way.

Heathcliff, I think I love you but I'm married! Catherine, I'm sure I love you but you're married and I'm a coward! Mr. Lockwood-- wait, you're Nelly now!-- why is everyone dying of consumption and ghosts and being morons? There, that's the book. Save yourself the turmoil and suffering you go through if you read it. It's a bad romance novel (and that's saying something) with no romance. And, uh, what's with having 2 narrators, one 20 years after the story takes place, who have a third hand account of the charcters? Just bad story telling. No wonder you used a pseudonym, Emily. Worst. Book. Ever.

Slow paced rather pedestrian story there are better attempts coving the same ground.

My students told me that this book wasn't as good as the first, but I totally disagree. I thought the past history of the coven was needed. Truly the reader learns the depth of despair Edward feels upon what he thinks is Bella's death. The Jacob twist is frighteningly good. I liked this one as much as the first.

Fitzgerald has a timeless style of writing that transcends generations. You'd never guess that these stories are over 80 years old. Benjamin Button is an almost modern sci-fi story of a man who ages backwards while the other two tales relate to femininity and wealth.

OK, after a while Max grows on you (she is funny), and it is a great idea--having wings, being able to fly. It is a very quick read--of course you suspend all reality and just enjoy the flight.

UPDATE: We are almost done listening to this book. We had to listen to one CD at a time alternating with music and other books since it didn't keep the littler kids interest as much. I wanted my older kids to hear it though. Terry Tempest Williams said her grandmother read this to her and that's what inspired me to share this with the kids. I wish I had read this book many years ago. Though I was aware of the dangers of chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, etc.), it was amazing to have it all spelled out for me. It reminded me of the reasons to drink filtered water. It made me rethink the way I want to live in this environment and I have some goals for myself in that area. How someone could read this book and consider it alarmist, I don't know. Carson wasn't just speaking of wildlife death, but also human death and disease associated with pesticides and herbicides. Plus, she cites multitudes of references to research articles and other sources. I believe it is every bit as pertinent today i.e. with diagnoses of chronic fatigue syndrome, a disease that is not well explained but may well be due to an accumulation of a lifetime of chemicals in the body. This information is dated in the sense that Carson was talking about DDT, but not in consideration of the thousands of chemicals that we encounter each day. I found this book especially alarming because although I am a zoologist and ecologist by study, I grew up in a staunchly republican state where care of the environment was not top on the billet. The Democrats (liberals) who were talking about the environment were made to seem just a bit wacked. Now the rest of the world is catching on to an idea that isn't left or right, but moderate and extremely important to the future of the planet (and more importantly, our children, grand children, great-grandchildren etc.).
