Wow! The ending totally took me by surprise. I am in shock right now.... Great writer, great story. Just a total 180 from fantasy to reality.

This is a book that I think a lot of people pretend to love because everyone else says they love it...Writing is not particularly strong other than a few poignant moments. This is the shit that inspires wealthy suburban kids to pretend to be new age hippy wannabes with their faux-spirituality and cliched political views...you think you're being original but you're all just variations on the same theme.

I chose this book because it had been a lit circle book for my local library and I was not disappointed. The main character lives through a year of quarantine with the others in her village because the plague has come to visit and the populace does not want to unintentionally spread the deadly sickness. This is one of those books which shows the reader both sides of the human condition -- how good people can be as well as how evil they can turn. There is an autho's note at the end of the novel which says while visiting England, she came upon a plaque signifying a village whose inhabitants had done just this - to stay and not spread the plague. That marker haunted her until she created this fictionalized version of what she thought the people had gone through. I didn't love the ending of the book - but I also saw how the author led me there. This is a satisfying tale with a little something for everyone.

I wasn't blown away by The Old Man and the Sea or The Sun Also Rises, but I still have to acknowledge this as one of the greats of its time and type.

I don't think this is great art by any stretch, but it was such a fun read. Very like to Wurthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and Rebecca.

** spoiler alert ** I first read this book years ago, and I was prompted to pick it up again thanks to a Plinky prompt about children's books (my answer found here). It's the typical story of a boy named Jonathan who finds out his parents aren't the nocturnal blood bank technicians he thought they were. They are, in fact, VAMPIRES. (Ooooh!) These vampires adopted their very mortal son apparently because they wanted someone pink and warm-blooded to love which is weird since they never seem to spend much time with him, what with all the blood-stealing they do. And I guess they are kind of cowardly since instead of telling their son the truth about what they are, they tell him outrageous lies like television doesn't exist (they killed TV!) and children don't go to school during the daytime (not everyone can afford fancy-schmancy tutors like Mr. Saginaw. Speaking of Mr. Saginaw -- what kind of man decides that he'd rather spend his life living in a house with two grown vampires and raising their child for them than to do, say, anything else in the world? Is the pay that good? Is he allowed to bring a girlfriend or a boyfriend or a squirrel back to his room occasionally? I don't know, I wish Ann M. Martin would give us more details about this fascinating mystery of a man. I want his backstory in flashbacks and flashforwards a la Lost). But the jig, as they say, is up when he meets an androgynous tomboy named Tobi who tells him about the wonders of television and school and sleeping at night. Tobi is another fascinating creature. Despite having a vagina, she hates everyone who has one because all females are stupid. Including herself and the author of this book and all the female readers of this book? Damn you, Tobi! Also, damn you, Jonathan. Yeah, I know, your parents are horrible and selfish for lying to you all these years, but you are pretty horrible and selfish yourself since you disrespect their need to drink blood -- THEY ARE VAMPIRES, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT THEM TO DRINK, PINA COLADAS?! -- and their need to sleep during the day, and then you make your mom bake cookies because that is what all moms are supposed to do, you sexist pig. It's like you don't care about anyone as long as you can fit in with the rest of the human children. Well, friends come and go, but vampire parents are forever, blood is thicker than water (even though you are adopted and have no blood in common but still). Et cetera, et cetera.
