This book was written by Truman Capote after he traveled to Kansas to chronicle the events surrounding the murders of a rural family there. The psychological trauma that Capote endured as a result of the relationship he formed with one of the killers was the basis for the movie Capote. This book was very well written. Real quotations are mixed in with imagined conversations and events to tell a fictionalized version of true events. The story of the murders is dark and disturbing in the way that all random, true crime stories remind us that no one is safe from real evil, not even in the middle of a stretch of farmland in rural Kansas. Thinking about this book still scares me.

I actually read this for a class in the Fall---I never expect to fall in love with books I "have" to read, but this was an exception. A totally amazing story of strong women finding their place in the world---it's like reading a piece of art.

The title is reminiscent enough of the Sweet Potato Queens and the Red Hat Society that you may be inclined to put it in the same category. This is a much less frivolous, and much more charming, book than either of the aforementioned. The epistolary format makes it all the more interesting to read.

Ugh...this book is so...so...unnecessary. Yes, I believe that is the correct word. The Wheel of time is like top quality butter that has been smeared over too much bread. The overall plot is very good, but when you stretch it over such a long mass of pages, it just loses its magic. As you read, you keep telling yourself, "Something is going to happen on the next page. Just one more page and then, finally, something will happen. But nothing ever does. Oh, occasionally, Robert Jordan will have the trollocs attack, just as a diversion, but you can't keep doing that, book after book after book, and expect people to keep their interest.

this is a novella, not a full length book. it was good if you've read the whole series up to this point but may not mean much if you haven't.

light reading, everything always works out in the end, refreshing after quite a few heavy books in a row

I was pretty disappointed with Charters' biography of Kerouac. She's an acknowledged expert on the Beats, and certainly knew them about as well as anyone. Yet somehow this biography is incredibly dry. She never looks beyond the surface of what he said or did, just relates the facts as she knows them. There's little insight into motivations. She'll say he did something, but won't say if he did it on purpose, by accident, because he got paid to do it, or because he was drunk. It just left me wanting a bit more. I suspect perhaps that she got too close to him and his friends and family, and so she left out a few things that would have told us much more about the man behind the myth. That said, it's still as thorough a biography as you can find on Kerouac, and that's certainly worth at least three stars. If it were anyone other than Ann Charters, I might have given it another star, but I expected more insight from her.

I accidentally picked this up and read the first chapter. I was intrigued and read the entire book in 2 days. I don't know if I would recommend it to someone, but it was an enjoyable read and a good way to pass the time when I read it. It was a bit over the top at times, but decent overall. I would not continue to read the Lomax and Biggs novels however.
