I love this book. It's my first book written by Ahern and I'm grateful that I picked it up. I never thought it was magical. I didn't expect it to be. But then Ahern told the story in a way that would make you believe in those fantasies. In times like these, we all need someone like Ivan. Someone who can teach us how to enjoy the simple things in life. To stop and smell the flowers. To not be afraid of letting ourselves loose. To not be BORING adults. Indeed adults can be boring. I definitely agree with Ivan. Although we must admit that following a routine everyday makes everything less complicated but it also makes us lifeless because we lose the spontaneity that we all need sometimes. After reading this book, I made a pact with myself that I will try to not be boring. To enjoy life as much as possible. To forgive people who have wronged me along the way because walking with a heavy heart entitles us to a greater burden. I'm giving it 4.5 stars just because I'm still doubting the existence of imaginary friends. LOL.

Literally laugh out loud funny & heart string touching. I now want to read everything these authors have written. Beginning... now.

This book terrified me. It was moving, scary, creepy, and touching all at the same time. I couldn't stop reading, as I was so eager to get to the next page to find out the next scare!

This book is a collection of testimonies about the Holocaust in Russia and the Soviet satellite states that, mainly for political reasons, didn't make it into the regular Black Book and weren't published until now. Hence, the Unknown Black Book. A word to the wise: reading this is like sticking your head inside a charnel house and taking a big whiff. Every page is spattered in gore. Many scenes described therein would be unacceptable even in a Hollywood horror film. That said, it actually tends to get rather dull. Because every story is basically the same, page after page of houses looted, people beaten, people humiliated, women raped, people tortured, people killed in all sorts of horrible ways. Yawn. This is a good collection of primary source testimonies on the Holocaust in the USSR, particularly the Einsatzgruppen, but it's hardly beach reading.

I'll save my comments until after our book club meets on Thursday. But, in a nutshell, it was a light, easy read. I'm realizing that, in general, I'm not too keen on books about personal self-discovery (see my review of "Eat, Pray, Love!"). Loved the travelogue - really tired of the, "Am I still in love with Annie" stuff.

Modoc is one of the most heart warming stories I have read in a long time. It touches on family, travel, heartbreak, self exploration and the closest friendship two beings can have.
