I just plowed through this book in one day and I should be completely exhausted and ready for sleep, but instead I feel completely awake. one of those experiences that kind of snaps you out of the daily hum and makes me realize how amazingly precious life is and how grateful I am to share it with those I love. Touching, emotional story passed on to me by my grandma (I know, she rocks). Definitely worth the read, but does have a number of "f" words in it, and I don't mean football or fudge.

such a great read...the short of it is that a young boy finds a book by a somewhat unknown author, he tries to find more books by this man and discovers someone is destroying all the man's works. it takes place in spain after the civil war.

I enjoyed the skillful incorporation of the Xmen/Marvel universe into traditional folktale/fairy tale lore.

Short stories. Each features a woman who is less than happy with her life - usually sexual relationships and/or drugs are involved to some extent. Many characters have difficulty with power struggles in sexual relationships - either finding the right match for them or coming to terms with what they want to find. There is prostitution involved in a few cases. Most characters live in New York, many went to the University of Michigan. Themes: domination/power in sexual relationships, New York trendy society and its pluses and minuses, relationships in general, women I felt like I was being reintroduced to the same character over and over again in these stories. Female who is reaching her 30's or a little past, college grad (often from Michigan) who moved to NYC, the same relationship and societal struggles. There was the exception of "Heaven" which was told more from the point of view of the mother/aunt of one of these types of characters, which I really enjoyed more. I felt that the cumulative effect of these stories was not there - they didn't seem to offer further enlightenment on the topic as the book went on - they all seemed the same. I think each individual story published on it's own or in an anthology of multiple authors would be interesting, but this book wore on me.

The main premise of this book is that God works through "common" people and not exlusively the ordained. In fact, the author suggests that those working outside of the church have the greatest impact for Christ. He uses lots of examples and includes his own story (Mega-church and all) to help illustrate his thoughts. His desire to love others for Christ is very inspiring. I read a lot of pseudo-Christian life books and I rate this near the top.

Uh, kind of embarrassed that I didn't get this one read until now considering my history and linguistics interests. I really enjoyed it--better than the movies, even, and I wish that I had read it before seeing them. I admit that the Christ symbolism was somewhat less than I expected--or rather, it was in different areas and characters. It definitely deserves to be considered as one of the most popular (but not best) books ever written.

Cortazar's first novel. A good application of the ship as a microcosm. The strength of this novel is its characters.
