I recommend to anyone who loves adventure, action, fiction, or fantasy. The whole series is superb and so is his series "Which and Wizard"!

Annie Koh had brought this book to my book sale brunch. I also haven't finished reading Friedman's <1> Longitudes and Attitudes.

Like all of Diehl's books, Primal Fear is outstanding. A week after it was published I was reading it on a flight from Atlanta to San Francisco. First class was almost empty and I was the only one awake when the steward knelt down beside my seat and whispered, "I noticed the book you are reading. It's obvious you are either a psychologist or a psychiatrist." Before I could correct him, he blurted out, "I have a primal fear of flying." I listened to his entire story, carefully closing the book and sliding it under my blanket so he wouldn't discover that it was a novel. When he was done I gave him some free "professional advise" which seemed to thrill him. I slipped the book into my brief case and got back to reading it at the hotel.

I read this because it was in my house. As part of my decision to get rid of stuff I don't want, I've decided to read/re-read all the books I have and get rid of the ones I don't like. What I learned from this book is that I really don't like romance novels that have nothing else to offer. Ugh.

Fascinating read from the biggest-selling writer nobody ever talks about in the academy. Looks like a straight-ahead con-man tale on the surface (but then again, so are Melville's THE CONFIDENCE MAN and Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY, in some ways), but the main character seems Humbertesquely repressive in his complicated sexuality, and reads Voltaire and Shelley when he's not ripping people off.

This non-fiction book was about one person's attempt to live all of the commandments for an entire year. Before taking on this endeavor, he wasn't really much of a believer of God. Incidentally, after a year of "living the commandments" he still wasn't any closer to God than when he started. I thought he was a little ridiculous in his "commandment keeping." He focused on obscure ones like: not mixing wool with linen in his clothing; calling the days of the week by their ordinal numbers to avoid voicing the names of pagan gods; trying his hand at a 10-string harp; growing a beard; eating crickets; and paying the babysitter in cash at the end of each work day. I thought it was a little neurotic and foolish personally. I also thought it was a perfect example of living the "letter of the law" while entirely missing the "spirit of the law." I think if a person were to truly study the Bible for a year, he should come away with a better understanding and relationship with God. I feel sorry for him. I feel like he just wasted a year of his life in order to gather material to write a book. He missed the boat, in my opinion.

Riley Keep was once a missionary. After a horrible tragedy he turned to alcohol for help, abandoning his wife and daughter. He takes to the streets and befriends a man named Brice, also an alcoholic. Brice is in much worse shape than Riley, though. Riley hears there might be something that can help Brice, so he brings Brice to the small town of Dublin, Maine. There Riley finds a cure for alcoholism, but it could be costly. And Riley will have to confront the secrets of his past. The writing could have used some extra editing in places. Overall, though, this is an uplifting, hope-filled story by an award winning author. It's somewhat leisurely paced with a character driven plot. Well worth the time spent reading this novel.

Pet Shop of Horrors is a manga by Matsuri Akino and the sequel to Pet Shop of Horrors. Welcome to Tokyo's Neo-Chinatown, a large building complex with chinese shops of all kinds. One of those shops is Count D's pet shop. Here one can find the most common cat or dog, alongside exotic animals that barely scrape past the Washington treaty. These pets can grant a person's deepest wish, but all wishes come with a price. Are the results good or bad? None can tell. Believe what you wish, because the truth is the truth. And just what about Count D himself? Just what could he be thinking? This series is very much like its predecessor, Pet Shop of Horrors. Still the episodic nature of the chapters keeps you reading, waiting to see what kind of customer will come through the door. Of course, even in a new country, Count D's pet shop still recives acusations like human trafficing or selling illegal drugs. Still, let's see what how 'animalistic' these animals -and humans- truly are.
