Alvin Ho: Allergic to girls, school, and other scary things by Lenore Look How many second graders carry a Personal Disaster Kit? I can think of one: Alvin Ho. Here is his Personal Disaster Kit (show page 8-9 spread). Some highlights: a three-leaf clover, garlic, and a scary mask. As you can guess, Alvin’s kind of scared of everything, and he’s allergic to girls. But he makes an exception for his best friend, Flea. She wears an eye patch over one eye and one of her legs is longer than the other, like a peg leg. She might as well be a pirate. Alvin’s also fond of his little sister and older brother. They all live with their parents in Concord, Massachusetts, where the American Revolutionary War started. His family is from a long line of Chinese farmer-warriors, but apparently the courage trait skipped just him. Within these pages, you can follow Alvin’s adventures with chicken pox, piano lessons, and his baseball (you know, the kind that’s autographed and kept in a special plastic case). And it’s illustrated. Need additional images: scan of pages 8-9 Grades 2-4 Humor, Illustrations

it seems that george macdonald attempts to explain his dreams to us. as far as tools go, he has very few reference points in reality to use. while reading, we feel that we are simultaneously on a different planet entirely yet turned inward to view the very core of our beings. the landscape is paradoxically alien, mystical and mystifying which may be a mirror of our own souls. it is a beautiful narrative of a spiritual journey.

How can I possibly give the same number of stars to Crime and Punishment and Pure Drivel? I admit, I have no idea. But I love Pure Drivel. It's absolutely hilarious. "Side Effects" is one of my favorite chapters. "How I joined Mensa" is another winner. It's intelligent, super goofy humor that pokes fun at our ridiculous society.

I made it 3/4 of the way through in preparation to watch the movie Capote. I was engrossed until about 1/2 way through, but a good book nonetheless.

I'm not used to old english. I don't know. May be something to do with english being my 2nd language. And for some odd reason, reading experience is similar to watching Kurosawa's Drunken Angel. How should I put it. Hmmm... I get 2 pages in 24 FPS. Smooth, easy to follow. Then, I lose track of words and sentences here and there. Back track and read it again didn't help. It's like watching slideshow. Then my brain picks up again for few more pages then followed by a gripping event/image that lingers around for next several pages. While still coping with a event/image word start to blur and I lose track of story again. Kurosawa's Drunken Angel is like that. Flow, flow, still, flow, cut, cut, flow, still, cut , flow, flow, still. The end.

I have been trying to get to this novel for a number of weeks, ever since I downloaded it the end of July. My anticipation increased as more of my friends read the book and raved about it. When I finally got a chance to read it, I was not disappointed. This novel by Allan Leverone gripped me from the first page and held my interest all the way to the end. Serial kidnapper Martin Krall is the type of character that can really make a thriller. A total psychopath that is at times cruel and twisted, and at other times creepily pathetic. Throw in the other wonderful characters that populate this story and you become invested in their lives quite quickly. Who would't feel empathy for a man who, in trying to do what he thinks is right, ends up bringing hell into his family life. Or his daughter who, through no action of her own, is faced with every young woman's nightmare. The characters are compelling and vibrant. The story line, like all good thrillers, runs a mile a minute with twists and turns. From the beginning you have the feeling that something just isn't quite right, and as the story progresses, you get glimpses of things that only make those feelings stronger, until you get to the stunning conclusion of the book. What you end up with in the end is a real page turner with wonderfully drawn out characters and a story line that will keep you guessing. I guarantee that you will be on the edge of your chair through out this one, and you won't be able to put it down.

Carroll's cleverness, wit and sheer creativity have not gotten stale over the years since 'Alice' was written; if anything, it gets better with age. This was a favorite when I was little, and it remains a favorite today. How many other books have claimed the affections of so many people of so many different ages? Even the driest of scholars enjoy a visit to Wonderland now and again.
