After reading Dear Husband I wanted to find another book no short stories dealing with relationships. Weiner's collection of short stories focuses on the relation aquired over the course of a lifetime. One of the first stories is about a teenage girl's relationship with her father. My favorite story out of the 11 would be the story of Marlie Davidow who reminds me of the song "skater boy" a girl sitting home alone with a child watching as an ex moves forward in life wondering what it would be like to still be with him. For a while i couldn't understand what the title had to do with the book but after reading the story it is about that one guy that got away. I think that everyone has that one break up and then a couple months or years later they see the person, hear something or in Davidow's situation sees the ex's wedding registry. I feel like Weiner hits on that weird topic that no one really wants to talk about, the subject that makes people look like losers.

I found this book very funny, it's definitely a book that both teenagers and adults enjoy. It's about a teenage girl growing up, something that mosts of us can relate to. Now, not all of us have little sisters that leave dirty diapers in your bed, or a huge cat that tries to eat your neighbors cat, but you know what I mean.

I stumbled upon this book in the rustic and charming Henry Miller library at Big Sur, California. If you have not been there, I highly recommend a visit. Elizabeth Marshall Thomas’s book is not a simple recitation of the behaviors of the deer on her New Hampshire land. The book is significantly more. It is a lesson on “expanded seeing” and a meditation on humans in a shared territory with the “wild other”. She takes us on a journey through her own experience and teaches us how to witness and learn from direct observation and the perspective of a “shared intent” to propagate and survive. Although I felt I came to the book with an already heightened empathy, after completing the book, I have an even more profound respect for the other-than-human and their highly tuned, innate environmental intelligence.

I just grabbed this book off the bookstore shelf as something to pass the time. It was a good book, but a little too romance-novel-esk for me. I could have done without some of the....descriptions. Otherwise, it was well written and a good story line about sisters and finding your way.

Ahh Greg. You made me cry on the bus. More than once. Because you're just THAT awesome. I just loved this book. LOVED IT. And that's all I have to say about that.

Here is where I have to admit a deep dark secret... I judge books by their cover. Yes, I really do. That is how I pick books at bookstores, I browse until something catches my eye then I read the back to see if the story interests me. I never read the first page, I NEVER NEVER read the last page (my dad does this, it drives me crazy, he reads the last couple pages to see if it ends well, then he reads the book!!!! No thanks dad!), but yes, I choose a book that has an appealing cover. So first, I should probably give two thumbs up to the cover art designers of all the great books I've read. That is how I chose this book, and as I've said in my status update, I was expecting some simple writing and not much character depth, but a great quick story. THIS BOOK BLEW ME AWAY! How far away did it blow me? Well 432 pages in 4 days, that's how far. The last time I ploughed through a book this big, this fast was East of Eden by John Steinbeck! I noticed the style of writing right off the bat. It was detailed, descriptive and strong. This book was like a movie in my head from page one. I saw every character, I saw every place, I saw every horrible action and tragic reaction. When they were driving I could feel the warm Carolina breeze and see the forest speeding by. Ohhhhhh... WHAT. A. BOOK. I'm not going to go into plot because nothing should be spoiled before anyone reads this! Just know that every level of human emotion is crammed into this 432 page saga. Love, loss, grief, guilt, vengeance, spirituality, victimization, abuse, addiction, self-hatred, courage, let me say that one again, courage, cowardice, honor, belief, passion, deceit... I could probably write 432 pages describing all the characters and all the emotions they go through. John Hart, you are a new favorite! Regardless of how any covers of your other and upcoming books look, be sure that I am going to read them.

Really enjoyed this book, not for the story so much as for the mystery it gradually unraveled and the ideas presented in it. I'd never explored this "what if" line of thinking before and really liked it.
