This book was amazing. Just when I thought I had it nailed, along came another twist. Well written, tightly plotted, believable characters. The book has it all.

If you think your childhood was not the best see where this book will take you. I have flashes of this book when I read other stories about famlies and especialy life in the south. Makes my own life look soft by comparison yet we had a tight life on a coal miners budget. It puts "things" in perspective when I think about what things in life are needed versus wanted. I think we often want more than we need. I love the authors style and felt like I lived near tem by the time I finished the book. I

A book that has been on my 'to-be-read' list for a very long time. I honestly don't know why I haven't read it before because it was very good. Extremely good. I wish I had read it earlier - it would have raised my standards for urban fantasy. War for the Oaks is said to be the book that defined the entire genre of urban fantasy and I can definitely see why and how. This raises the 'elves in the city' concept to a whole new level for me. Every other urban fantasy I've read got blown away after I finished this one. Basic plot: Eddi is a musician who gets pulled into the war between the two warring factions of Faerie. She ends up getting more invested into the war than she had planned as she makes friends with the phouka who is guarding her and discovers that some of her band members are Faerie themselves. HIGHLY recommended.

This is a finely crafted piece of VERY dark fantasy. I couldn't put it down - which is saying something, because frankly I am a jaded readder when it comes to high fantasy and these days it tends to bore me. Usually high fantasy is too predictable. This one twists about in all sorts of unexpected ways. Apparently it's part one of a trilogy and I cannot begin to imagine where Lawrence is going, but have every intention of being along for the ride. It's not a child friendly book, it runs along the edges of horror, and it isn't about some big fight between some ultimate (yawn) evil and some obvious hero type. Nor is it your standard faux-mediaeval. I don't want to say what it is, because that would spoil it a bit. If you want to be surprised, aren't afraid to be shocked and want to read a book that isn't just like something else, read this. It rocks. I think it's one of the best fantasy books I have ever read.

I read this before I saw the show (which was amazing). It's a bit hard to read but very interesting.

Although this is a novel it reads like a true story. It is a very touching book.

Wonderful translations of Tolstoy's novel. The 50+ page monologues on Russian agriculture are quaint. Overall I liked the novel. Anna's character is a well developed. I didn't despise Anna, as I did Flaubert's Emma in Madame Bovary
