I loved this book. Read it in 9th grade English class and it was great. The themes and motifs in this book could be related to a lot of people.

Sometimes you just need a quick fun book. I read this over Easter weekend, and loved every second. I loved the movie too, but the book was better. This book really wasn't intellectual, but it did make one interesting point. In the book you can only vote if you have gone through and graduated from military training. This prevents the uneducated and uncommitted citizens from voting. While this is a bit extreme, I might be of the opinion that there should be some more barriers to voting (like a standardized test). Otherwise our elections end up being a marketing contest. Name recognition is huge in marketing - would W have won otherwise? Would Hilary have a chance?

The less is revealed of the plot before reading this book, the better, although I have to admit that I found it so disturbing that when I had read about a third I looked it up on Wikipedia to find out about the end! It is a dystopia, up there with 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Brave New World. The difference with those works is that this time the point of view is feminist. 1984 shows a world in which early 20th century totalitarism has triumphed; the latter two show the consequences of complete consumerism in a fake democracy, and The Handmaid's Tale shows the worst nightmare of an eighties' feminist. Stylistically, the book is perhaps too fragmentary, but that is a consequence of the chosen mode. What can you expect from a first person narrator who has been forbidden to read and write for several years? A highly recommended book for feminists and fans of dystopias alike. The only flaw is the risk of optimistic readers thinking that "at least things aren't as bad as this".

ok, reading this the second time was better. you know i love faulkner but sometimes i want to kill him. this dragged on and on, but finally, in the last chapter or so, it was like pure poetry. that's the thing: he can get away with hundreds of pages of UGH because in the end his couple of really incredible paragraphs are better than most people's entire novels. yeah.

first published in 1936. The storyline is non-sequential, with the events shuffled, so that each chapter picks up the strand at a different point in the characters' lives. ”The interest in pacifism coincides with Huxley's humanistic tone in the middle years of his oeuvre."

I hard starting a series in the middle but I never heard of Jon F. Merz. But after reading The Kensei, book 5 in The Fixer series, I'm a fan. Suspense, action, really great descriptions of locations & characters, book 5, The Kensi, is really good. Getting the 1st four books very soon.

The writing is really excellent, the plot less so. As a result, it's very easy to read and enjoyable from that standpoint, though not a particularly memorable book.

At last a book by a favorite author other than Parker. I didn't realize until I got the book home that it had been an Oprah Book Club selection. Elizabeth Berg writes for women, with an understanding of women's minds and emotions. This time she follows a woman who has just been asked for a divorce and her adjustment to a new life. Part of the 'adjustment' involves taking in renters, some an asset to her life, some a drain. Favorite quote: 'Extraordinary circumstances make for different kinds of behavior.'

I thought this book was terrific. I was meeting a fellow for lunch and I picked it up at a used bookstore and the day had a magical quality free of the deadening reality of all the gunk in my ordinary life. It carried that on for pages. If you like essays you'll like it.
