I’m not quite sure what is elegant about a hedgehog, but I haven’t ever seen one in person so they might be strikingly elegant and their photos just don’t convey that. But despite that, I enjoyed the French translated book The Elegance of the Hedgehog. The story is told from two points of view: The concierge of a posh French apartment house and one of the young residents of this same hôtel particulier. Neither of them is particularly happy. Both are very intelligent and feel the need to hide this from the world. Both, not only hide their cleverness but hide themselves as well and have very few, if any, real friends. Paloma is 12, is taking Japanese as her second foreign language and is teaching herself everything she can about Japan. She loves Haikus and, on June sixteenth, she is planning on burning down the apartment and then killing herself. Renée is 54. She is a widow and is the concierge at number 7 rue de Grenelle. She describes herself as short, ugly and plump and believes that she is just about invisible to the residents who live in the eight luxury apartments, except when they need a package mailed, or plants watered, or unwelcomed guests turned away. The story is of their pain, their contact, and their growth. It’s lovely.

I enjoyed this one as well. Brown has a way of writing so that the reader never has a good time to put the book down. The end of this one disappointed a bit in that it didn't seem as realistic as the rest of the book. ******** I decided to re-read this book before the movie comes out in May. After seeing the previews, I realized that I don't remember much about the actual plot of the story.

This is a heartbreakingly beautiful novel - and I am so very glad that I read it! In 1939, Lina is just 15 years old when her family is deported from their home in Lithuania and forced to spend years working in labor camps in Siberia, where the conditions were similar to Nazi concentration camps. Despite the devastating circumstances, she amazingly manages to retain her identity, her dignity, her hope for a future of freedom, and even manages to find love. Haunting, horrific, and simply beautiful, this is a book that will be appreciated by teens and adults alike. Highly recommend.

Jonathan Oliver selected a talented bunch of writers who produced great stories. After The End Of The Line, Oliver proves that he knows what he's doing. Brilliant stuff! ... a more detailed review to follow soon.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly and could barely put it down despite needing to sleep to prepare for my 7 on/ 7 off shift. the characters were vivid and enjoyable and very genuine to me. I am glad we have come this far, but looking at society and its disparities I can tell we still have a ways yet to go. This makes this book relevant even now, especially now. I docked it a star because I felt the suspense built into the book (Constatine and.what Mommy did to Hilly) were a little too obviously trying to keep readers hooked. That didn't stop me from flying through however. I also felt as though Celia Foote wasn't given any real closure and thus seemed like one of the more poorly fledged out. And finally, despite it being so well-written and the author acknowledging this, I can't help but think "What does a white woman know about being black during segregation?" despite this recurring thought I truly enjoyed the insight this novel provided. It was a complex story with an enduring message.

Why does everyone hate this book? It was the probably the crowd, but I couldn't get a 16 year old to like this for all my passionate teaching. I love that Dickens demands patience and discipline from his readers - and he rewards, boy does he reward! I cannot get the image he paints of Madame Therese Defarge out of my head. If you can stomach the length and seemingly pointless plot twists, you will be greatly enriched.

I really enjoyed the fresh writing in this book... I felt like Hurston wrote with no apologies, no introduction, no preamble in portraying the tragedy that befalls one particular African American couple, just slams you into the middle of it and makes you hold your breath as it unfolds.
