i was really loving bukowski's fiction (which is truly amazing) but then... wow. fante is terrific. this book is funny and sad and uplifting and heartbreaking, but above all it's more honest and earnest than anything i've read.

It’s a mystery that is more of the cozy type, and it appears to be the first of a series. The setting is in a fictional coastal town in the San Francisco area of California. The protagonist is a daughter of one of the founding families of the area which has fallen on hard times. Ignoring her socialite background, she has found a fulfilling career as a zookeeper, but when a member of the most prominent family in town is found mauled to a bloody pulp in the enclosure of the Giant Anteater, she has a crime to solve. The man had been shot, but, nevertheless, the crime threatens her charge, and subsequent developments threaten her own life as well. This book is a fun listen. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I liked this book but it never took me where I wanted to do. It seemed to stay on the surface of the people involved and where they were. I loved the premise and the beginning is great but the book drags on in the middle and tries to wrap it up too quickly. A fun story of a rescue mission in a far off jungle.

** spoiler alert ** I just finished reading this book on Cuba, which talks about the stories of three Generals in the Cuban Revolutionary Army who are of Chinese Decent Armando Choy, Gustavo Chui, and Moises Sio Wong. Would tell their story of how life was like in Pre-Revolutionary Cuba which was rife with poverty, corruption, exploitation, and racism. They would go on to tell about the History of immigration to Cuba from China in the mid 19th Century as indentured servants for the Spanish Colonial Regime before the Wars of Independence broke out in which many Chinese and Chinese-Cubans helped fight the wars of Independence which finally toppled Spain from Cuba, but the U.S. would come in and take it's place. The Generals would then tell about how they each joined with Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement in which through their contributions helped overthrow the U.S. backed Batista Dictatorship in Jan 1st 1959 and from there would help Cuba in it's transition from Capitalism to Socialism. The Generals would also talk about the Cuban-Angolan War in which they sided with the Revolutionary Angolan Government against the Right wing forces of Zaire, UNITA, and Apartheid South Africa, the later whom had superior firepower and technology nonetheless suffered a crushing defeat in Cuito Cunavale, Angola by the combined forces of Cuban-Angolan forces in which the South African Colossus was broken bringing about the end of Apartheid in South Africa, Independence of Nambia, and sovereignty for the People's Republic of Angola. Finally the Generals would talk about their projects such as cleaning up Havana Bay to Organic Urban Farming, as well as participation in Hugo Chavez's Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Yesterday our campus bookstore had a sale and so I went and bought books including this one. Then instead of doing math homework I laid in the grass and read Rilke out loud to myself for two hours. I didn't mind that my throat got dry after a while.
