I enjoyed this book tremendously and it was finished before I had time to notice. I found the level of the language and the dialogue as a bit too easy, especially when compraing it to what I got used to in the past week (aka, vanity fair), but the plot and adventures made up for it. I think though, that the simplicity of the language ruined a bit of the experience of reading the book. I'm also not too sure of the historical facts, I am not too well researched on ancient Egypt. But this book definitely gave me a thirst to find more books on the subject. I did love Toya (Seti's wife), it's refreshing to read of a strong woman in ancient culture. 20.3.07

I liked it but have grown to expect more from Francine Rivers. I had recently read another book with mother and daughter issues (Winter Garden), which I liked better. Perhaps the conversation that came out of discussing this book would be very interesting, because every mother and daughter have a unique relationship with many factors playing into it. I liked it enough to read the sequel.

When I first started reading this book, I thought, whoa, don't leave it out where your young kids will find it and two, if you have vivid dreams like me, don't read it before bed. I was afraid the intense detail would have me living the scenes in the first few chapters. It was quite captivating, and now has me wanting to read some of the books that were mentioned. The only part for me was the ending was no surprise. I keep going back and forth from 3 to 4 stars, so I'll keep it at a 4 because of the imagery.

Terrifying. The author is deromanticizing violence by making it both extreme and banal; his West is Vietnam or a killing floor, a place where good people are compromised and helpless. Life in the modern world tends toward chaos, in this book, not because "good men do nothing" but because ordinary people have ordinary weaknesses. Drug lords rule the border simply because, as one character remarks, of the casual behavior of schoolkids. The most curious feature of this book is the favorite murder weapon of the antagonist. I suspect that McCarthy's intention was to show this character's boredom (he finds ways to entertain himself) and his lack of concern (he sees people as animals, and he doesn't mind touching them). However, it could also be taken as counterproductive to the author's purpose; it makes the violence too interesting and strange. I'm of two minds about that. I see a lot of contradictory reviews here on Goodreads. I say the book makes violence banal, but others complain that it fetishizes violence. Some complain that the book is totally incomprehensible, while fans of McCarthy say that it's way too obvious. On the latter question, I'm going to go with obvious, but only once you read past the first hundred pages or so.

I was so unbelievably excited when I heard that Rachel Vincent was writing a novella for Tod. I love Tod, he has to be one of my favorite characters in the whole Soul Screamers world. I really enjoyed reading this little shorty for him. I had no idea that Tod had such a sensitive side...but you never know....I heart him even more after reading this though. My heart was breaking through most of this, you should be warned, I was so sad for the whole situation but I am glad we get to have both Nash and Tod around, the world would be a sad lonely place without them both. I don't have a whole lot to say since this is just a shorty but there was a tiny bit of teen steam...which is like a very light and mild version of adult steam...but steam nonetheless which was awesome.

Required reading for english. It's not really my flavor but the story in the context of literary history (star crossed lovers theme that has been romanticized in film, theatre and real life for centuries since) it's a good story.

I finally made it beyond the point where I had stopped at least twice before and I couldn't believe how fabulous the story became. I just couldn't put it down. My love-hate relationship with this story had finally become just love :)

I listened to this book with my daughters in the car which may have detracted from the story. Or perhaps not. I like the book, as I do all of Pratchett's Tiffany Aching novels, but I didn't find myself riveted, which is new. I found the twists and turns of the story a little hard to follow and I didn't find the ending as completely satisfying as I usually do. The story and all the characters are wrapped up nicely in a very final way this time, though I wasn't completely convinced by the ending. My daughters found it sad and not as funny as previous novels. They missed the Nac Mac Feagals - even though they were there: they were just... different. Still very worthwhile and a necessary read for fans of the chalk and the pictsies.
