The best part of this book were the descriptions of Africa and its beauty. It sounded like paradise. The descriptions of the beauties and harsh realities of life in the wild were very well explained. I liked Roo. What drove me nuts was how an alpha man like Wyk could let himself be emasculated the way he was. When he explained close to the end of the book, it made more sense, but it was still a tough pill for me to swallow. It seems this is Tarras Wilding's only book. I do wish they had written more.

Let me open by saying that I am a giant nerd, so this book automatically appeals to me on the intellectual level (It has footnotes! You don't even understand how much I love footnotes!). Anagrams? Math formulas to describe relationships? GAME SHOWS? It was love at first reading of dustjacket. Colin is freaking adorable. He reminds me so much of one of my best friends, of whom John Green is his favorite YA author. Coincidence? I think not. Anyway, all of his insecurities about not being a prodigy, all of his little quirks just make him so real he's almost tangible. John Green always manages to invoke that quality from his characters. If Colin was real, we would totally be friends. Hassan was also hilarious. The way he delivers when he speaks, or at least the way it sounds in my head, cracks me up. Gutshot sounds like a great place to have an adventure, and you couldn't help but love everyone in it. Well, except for TOC. He's a jackass. I'm having a hard time expressing how awesome this book was. You're just going to have to read it yourself.

Last year I had a friend who decided to forego xmas cards and instead donate the same $ to the Lost Boys of Sudan. At that point in time 1) I didn't really know who the lost boys were and 2) I was annoyed, because I had already sent my xmas cards out, and it made me feel shallow. I finally picked up this book a couple of weeks ago, and have spent the past 2 weeks journeying in and out of Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Atlanta. I kept joking that "I'm going to Sudan"; I would pick up the book and disappear to my couch, only to reemerge an hour later distracted and pensive. I don't know the last time I read a book this well-written. Eggers takes the story of Valentino Achak Deng (and yes, you do easily begin to tell the Sudanese names apart) and tells his memoir (ie. true story) in novelistic form. It is absolutely spellbinding. You hear the accent in the writing, and the voice is one of the most distinct I've ever read in fiction. At the same time, Eggers knows his audience (as does Valentino), and he weaves the story in a way that will enrapture modern audiences. There is so much to think about when you put this book down, it's one of those books that you can say changed your life and how you see the world. If I could give this book a standing ovation, I would.

This book is fantastic!!!!!!! 2 souls madly in love with each but timing always seems off for them. I CANNOT wait to see the movie. The end surprised me. So didn't see it coming.
