Carol Anderson makes the compelling case that the Civil Rights Movement's great failure was abandoning the human rights framework on which it was based. Due to many factors, but especially the Cold War and the lingering effects of McCarthyism, the Civil Rights Movement abandoned economic and social rights struggles. This abandonment led to a plateau in progress, and today, the struggles of people of color are very much within the realm of violations of economic and social rights. For real change to occur, we need to look beyond civil rights, to human rights.

I read this for YA book group at school, but it's totally appropriate for grown-ups. Quite beautiful, with characters who feel intensely real. If you have any German background, you will find this especially interesting!

This is the first Harry Potter book I've actually enjoyed. Go figure, it was the movie I hated the most. =)

When asked to make a list of his wishes, Joey comes up with "I wish my dog could speak," and "I wish jam and jelly were the same thing." That was only one of the moments in the book that made me want to laugh out loud. The book is not just funny, but also thoughtful and sad at times. Gantos' narrative feels rather like a hurricane, but then, so does Joey's behavior. The ending is happy without being trite and makes a nice resolution for the series.

Totally captivated by the movie (which I saw when it first came out, and which I have seen perhaps half a dozen times or more), I first read the book (hardcover, via the Science Fiction Book Club, about 1970) and the original short story (The Sentinel) with great expectations, but was, overall, let down in many respects. Simply, for me the book failed to resonate the way the movie did. And, it was only years later, after reading Nietzsche in 1983, that the relationship of the movie to Nietzsche further diminished the book for me. There are strong comparisons to be made between the movie and the author of Also Sprach Zarathustra -- from the use of the opening strains of Richard Strauss' music of the same name, to the imagery of the star gate at Saturn (Jupiter in the movie, Gravity in Nietzsche) through which the hero must pass on his way to the summit of overcoming as he remakes himself into a new man (star child). The book indicates (to me, and perhaps only me) that it's mostly Kubrick who drove the process. I am still not certain how Clarke felt about the whole thing. But I strongly doubt he really enjoyed any of it, despite the success it brought.

Read for book club (otherwise I would have put it down after struggling through first quarter.) I was interested in subject and definitely learned much more about internment of Japanese in America (never even talked about in my high school.... crazy ridiculous!!) Unfortunately, did not enjoy writing....I thought maybe the author felt the need to include every detail discovered of the family and that didn't always make for interesting reading. At times, I also felt the author explained things that didn't need explaining.....a bit dumbed down. Of course, the incredible racism in this country toward Japanese people during those times should always be taught and remembered.

I realize this is a classic of English literature, but I could never get past the fact that none of the characters were likable, or showed any signs of change or redemption. It was just multi-generational misery. The one upside I had was getting to visit the moors where Wuthering Heights was written while reading the book. It's a very dramatic, brooding landscape... and made it easier to see why Emily Bronte would reflect those same themes in her writing. Still wasn't enough to win me over to the book, though.
