After the terrifying lows of the Mary-Ann story in Babycakes, Significant Others is more of a return to form. It features a lot of characters never seen before or since, but it gives Michael and Brian their moments without being excessively cruel to either of them. The Wimminwood stuff seems possibly more relevant today than it did back then, although DeDe has to put up with an awful lot from D'or, who always gets away scott free. The first time I read this I was struck by the sweetness of Booter's ending; as a throwaway character, he's much more substantive than Wren Douglas but I don't believe we ever see him again in the series. It's nice to have a character with terrible politics who's never a terrible person and, while the story gets silly, it never gets properly ridiculous. A quieter entry, but a rewarding reread.

I have been rereading the entire series in chronological order. Time for this one!

I've read a number of personal narratives from the Cultural Revolution, but most of them have been from authors who were still in school when the turmoil began in 1966. Cheng's account provides the perspective of someone who was middle-aged and who was imprisoned for much of the struggle in a vivid and highly-detailed account. Her analysis of the political struggles taking place among the top party officials also is much more sophisticated than most of the other narratives out there, again probably because she herself was older, wiser and more politically sophisticated, having already lived through some of the earlier political upheavals and the 1949 Communist Revolution. It also fills in some gaps that exist in narratives written by younger authors. Those narratives speak of life for the then-children whose parents had been denounced for one reason or another. This narrative speaks from the perspective of one who was herself denounced and who worried about the effect it would have on her 24-year-old daughter. This is without a doubt an essential read for anyone interested in China's Cultural Revolution.

Simplemente mágico.

One of the singularly most poignant and lovely YA books I've ever read. A 'new' author who knows her stuff and presents an authentic glimpse of youth-life today -with all its messiness, profound discoveries, and mischief.

I really don't like reading books about religious persecution. They bring me down.

A good book holds your attention and imagination, makes you care about characters and plot developments, impresses you with use of language, and makes you think. A great book does all that, but makes you want to read more, and to write. This one is great.

This is a three and half. Why am I rounding down and not up? Not sure... This is a historical fiction based (loosely, I suppose) on the life of Mary Boleyn, the sister of Anne Boleyn, who was briefly Henry VIII's second wife. Turns out Mary was the king's mistress before he got rid of his first wife to marry Anne. It was a good read and Gregory did a good job of creating a sense of the period. What I didn't like was that the sisters were portrayed as all good (Mary) or all bad (Anne). But still, it was enjoyable. I have another book of Gregory's sitting on my dresser and I'm looking forward to reading it.

I was a little worried about this book at first because I thought it might be preachy, and it was a little, but Princess stereotypes are such a big issue, one wonders if a book can be too heavy handed about it. One thing is I find myself feeling for the boys in this story more than the girls, they're being really excluded until the very end. I like that the picture actually shows more powerful versions of princesses so that they can have another image to aspire too.
