Another one of my all-time favorites. I don't know how I stumbled on this book, but its worth the 955 pages (yeah really!). What I liked best about this book is the exploration of the main characters alienation. He is neither British nor Indian, Christian, Muslim or Hindu, he's everything and nothing all at once. Actually I might recommend this book if you liked Life of Pi. Although I would say that this is a much more thorough and interesting tale. The novel takes place in India in the late 1880s, during a series of battles between Afghanistan and India and other various battles for the East India Company. Ashton (also called Ashok) is born to an English professor and a British mother in India. However his parents die of cholera when he is a baby and he is raised Hindu by a woman named Sita. Ashok lives a life in poverty as an attendant for a noble family and also becomes very close to the games keeper who is Muslim and learns their traditions as well. It's only when he is 13 or 14 that he learns that he is English and not Indian. He's sent to British boarding school and finds himself totally alienated. When he is 18 he joins the Corps of Guides and returns to India. Lots of battles and love affairs follow. This is a great book if you like detailed family sagas and historical novels, since I believe the book is couched in actual events.

werrr another Syafrina's Metropop that i like ! yaah walo ketauan sih novel2 mbak nana (sok akrab banget)latarnya pasti sekitaran Batam or s'pore sono keinget novel my two lovers deh pas baca ni , hihihi dan dua novel terakhir yang gw baca (termasuk ini) dua2nya nyeritain soal ex boo, ga ada niatan gt sih pas ngerental gw cuma tertarik buat baca aja bnerenya, :) hmm bener2 dihadapkan ama dua pilihan sulit , di satu sisi Dina masih syang ama Ferry tp ferry masih aja tarik ulur soal pernikahan, tp kalo mnurut gw sih dia emang ga ada niat tuh ngawinin si Dina . lagian Dina emang lebih cocok ama Faisal :) heheh bagian lucunya juga ada disini, jadi ga terlihat tegang mulu pas baca, dan soal gossip gay faisal, ampoon bok lucu deh itu . tp kalo gw jadi dina sih emng bakal pusing kali yaa masa dikiranya kita ada crush ama gay beee - -

I don't know why, but I decided to re-read this book, which I first read when I was in high school. In re-reading it, I think I learned as much about myself as I did about Frank Herbert's world of Dune--it is amazing how much I have learned in those 30+ years! It was also amazing to re-read it and feel like the high school student I was--sort of like listening to a song from your youth and being taken back to a time long ago.

I wish I could give this more stars but because of the unnecessary sexual parts and intermitant strong language I barely gave it 3. I have read more recent books by this author and had hoped his earlier ones would have less distasteful parts, but I was wrong.

This is book two to The Golden Compass. I found myself reading it because I developed a liking for the characters in The Golden Compass. I didn't love this book. I'm not sure that I will read the third one in the trilogy.

AMAZING, the film is nothing compared to this. There is so much in this book, if you read it too fast all of the meaning will pass right by you. I find it fascinating to read and think through this book.
