Seriously. The funniest book in the universe. I have no idea how they got away with this for kids. There's even a butt-glossary. AWESOME!

50 pp and out on this one. I went into it with high expectations of brittle, piercing humor and glamorous characters. After wading through 50+ pages of luxury-brand bombardment, "see how shallow this character is?" humor, and outdated it-list name dropping, I couldn't care about anyone in the book (other than perhaps the dogs Mr. and Mrs. Chow) enough to continue on. Perhaps I gave up too soon. Convince me to give it another go?

I liked this book. After the first hundred or so pages which were slow going the pace really picked up and then I couldn't put it down. The plot twists were incredibly obvious, but I don't think the point was to tell an original story. The point was in the style of the telling. Anyway, if you don't like the art of storytelling then you probably won't like this book. But if you appreciate atmosphere and period novels and betrayal, then you might like it.

Much came from the Dutch rather than the Puritans and Pilgrims! For anyone interested in this era or who has, like me, ancestors who lived in Dutch New York, this is really insightful and interesting. Might be worthwhile also for those who live on Manhattan Island or in Breukelen or near the Bouwerie or Greenwyck Village or Nieuw Haarlem.
