Four (and a half) stars-- would recommend reading her short in GUY NEXT DOOR, "Just One Taste," first, since it supplies some eeeenteresting background to a few of the scenes in the novel. And before you get too excited-- I read the ARC of this. The finished product is due out Sept. 2011. So... I loved this book enough to devour it in one sitting. It made me giggle, it made me cry (tears of anguish AND happy tears), and it has one of the most beautiful lines I've ever read in a sex scene ("He explored her in one unbroken touch that seemed like creation, as if she'd been formless before she stepped into him.") The sex is hot hot HOT (and yet-- safe! I *love* that the author takes time to point that out!), and most of the characters are incredibly three-dimensional and real. It wasn't *quite* a five-star for me, because of some minor points. For me, Luke's partner, Simone, was an exception to otherwise really well-developed characters. I was intrigued by the glimpses we got, but I would've liked to see a little more fleshing-out for her. She kind of fades quietly into the background most of the time. Upon reflection, this could've been a side effect of how she was handling her own personal problems-- they sort of effaced her from the story-- but I still think it was a shame we couldn't get to know her better.) Also, the pacing seemed to lose momentum a bit in the middle (although it picks back up again pretty quickly). Overall, though... j'adore! What I love most about Dahl's contemporary romances is how determined and "game" her characters are despite the craziest of circumstances, and this title is no exception. Tessa and Luke are stressed, they're busy, they're kinda screwed up, but dammit, they will work their butts off for their shot at happiness. (And believe me, these two *really* have their work cut out for them-- I worried more than once how the author was going to pull a HEA out of this story.) Tessa's work AND family life are a tense hell because of problems with the family business. Luke's living under a cloud of nasty rumors and doesn't have the greatest reputation when it comes to relationships. Both of them have capital-P Pasts-- they have issues that, if not outright secrets, are at least things they're not comfortable sharing with others. They're both stubborn and emotionally guarded. As if that weren't enough, both of them have friends and loved ones going through really rough patches, too-- people they desperately want to help and protect. The LAST thing either of them needs is another complication... and what could be more complicated than a new relationship? Still, they're willing to TRY, and that's part of what I so admire in them. How many relationships fall apart these days because one side or the other is just tired of putting the time in? How many don't happen because someone's unwilling to take that risk? Luke and Tessa are given a lot of reasons not to date-- heck, Tessa's big brothers are two big, looming, overprotective reasons of their own-- but they both recognize the chemistry brewing between them. (Ouch. Sorry, bad pun.) This is not to say that the path of love runs smooth once they decide to date. (I did mention the whole "stubborn and emotionally guarded" bit, right?) They both make a few foolish choices (usually for the right reasons), but they're not ridiculously stupid about it. (One of my biggest pet peeves in romance is when a character's refusal to address (or even recognize) a personal flaw turns into willful, rampant stupidity merely to force a plot point to happen.) Dahl's characters are human, but they're also smart... they characters may stomp and pout and yell, but eventually they can recognize when their fears are holding them back, and they're wise enough to grow. I raise my glass to Ms. Dahl for this one-- and I can't wait for the next two rounds! (I'm *definitely* buying.)

Oh Jodi. Not shocking me anymore. While I predicted an ending that did NOT happen, she did not impress me with the ending of this book. While I like her willingness to tackle controversial subjects it seems like this was just an attempt to have a soapbox for her to speak out FOR gay rights and AGAINST organized religion. I agree with many of her stances here, but find it hard getting on board with her way of thinking. Believe it or not, one CAN be a Christian and also for gay rights. One thing that I've noticed a lot more in Jodi's books lately is her political proselytizing. She's always been one to share her opinions, but it has been kind of blantant over the head paddling lately. It annoys me to no end when people automatically align religion and politics. When they say "Religious Right" or "Evangelical Right Wing Church". While religion and conservative stances on politics are correlated, they are not exclusive. One CAN be religious and not "right". One CAN be part of a Evangelical and not part of a "right wing church". On the flipside, one can be conservative and technically AGAINST gay rights and not be at all spiritual. The church I grew up attending does not denounce homosexuality as a sin. The church marries gay couples and its slogan is "no matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here". Christianity in its raw form is an absolutely beautiful thing, with kindness and love and openness and acceptance. And Jodi made it very clear in her speech that her Christian POV IN THIS BOOK is that of the "vocal minority", but it is books like this that make the masses believe that Christianity is truly vile and intolerant, which is not the case at all in my opinion. I still love her. I still will read every book she ever writes. She is still my favorite author. And she does force me to think about things in a different way. Ironically, reading this story has actually inspired me to seek out a home church, which I have been putting off. While I have never stopped being a Christian, this book has made me actually want to go back to church. Not because of their intolerance, but because of the amazing teachings I have experienced in my churchs of openness and love and acceptance, of goodwill and of fellowship.
