I loved the movie and the book nearly put me to sleep. Still, I learned a bit more about everything in the storyline. I'm just glad I saw the movie first or I may have been convinced it was like the book. Now I'm wary about reading more Jane Austen. Rightly so? Anyway, hurray for penguins and their classics!

I read this for English in high school and I remember it being kind of boring. The only part I enjoyed was when they were helping the black man escape his cell. That part was hilarious, even though it was a horrible way to treat another human being.

** spoiler alert ** I was so disappointed when the married protagonist had an affair with a monk, that I didn't enjoy anything from then on. Their relationship hadn't even been developed adequately, so it wasn't believable to me. I did like the phrase Jessie used to describe herself, "part of the problem was her chronic inability to astonish herself." I always like to get the questions from Readinggroupguides.com, answer those thoughtfully. Recommend using that site for all books possible.

Ein Mann der von Autokanibalismus redet und dann von einem Kanibalen gefressen wird. Eine Frau lässt sich zu Tode füttern, von einem Mann der Liebe mit Nahrung gleichsetzt. Die Autorin Cornelia Travnicek sieht sich selbst so: “Krankhaft süchtig nach dem geschriebenen Wort.„ Eindrucksvoll schreibt die junge Schriftstellerin in ihren Geschichten von Kälte und Sehnsucht, von Liebe und Verzweiflung. Regelrecht gefühllos beschreibt sie Situationen von komisch bis erschreckend. Nicht immer ist klar, was gemeint ist, was gesagt werden soll. Doch oft werde ich in die Schicksale gezogen und friere in der Kälte der Worte. Auffällig sind die Titel der Geschichten, aussagekräftig und ungewöhnlich fantasievoll.

An easy read. Reichl adopts various personae to review restaurants. Are the disguises are really parts of her personality? Enjoyable, although for some reason I always doubt if I want to read another of her books. Wish I give 3.5 stars.

I'm not sure if this book really deserves a full 5 stars, but I am giving it that because it is extremely powerful and memorable, especially if you're a parent. This book was really heart-breaking and made me petrified of meth. Having read a bit about Nic Sheff's memoir, it sounds like Nic's perspective of his childhood was not quite as idyllic as his father's, but with tween aged kids at home I still feel very vulnerable about the future and I know that nothing I do can provide immunity from this threat. Although it was scary, I am glad I read this book to broaden my perspective on recognizing and dealing with addiction, and also because it was just a compelling and well written book.

I can understand the appeal here--her writing is no doubt impeccable, but Lion Shriver's SO MUCH FOR THAT is just too much. There isn't an uplifting page in the lot and it's not that she's being realistic, it seems more wholly ignorant of the kindness and hope that people can express. You don't have to be a delusional idealist to see light in some things. There is very lttle light here. That said, I will say that by the end of this novel, was crying my eyes out.
