This is a book that tries to help you understand Zen thought through a compilation of quotes that demonstrate Zen ideas. It doesn't work. Rather, I should say, it doesn't seem to work so well. The quotes are sometimes humorous, sometimes moving, but at the end of the book, I felt no closer to understanding Zen. The Zen parables are especially confusing (to the uninitiated, I guess): A monk brought two potted plants to his Master. “Drop it,” ordered the Master. The monk dropped one pot. “Drop it,” again ordered the Master. The monk let the second pot go. “Drop it,” now roared the Master. The monk stammered: “But I have nothing to drop.” The Master nodded. “Then take it away.” In the end, one of the quotes made the most sense to me, “Talking about Zen all the time is like looking for fish tracks in a dry riverbed.”

This book comes highly recommended from Andrew Heffner, and he's usually right about these sorts of things.

As an aspiring primary school teacher I thought today I needed to 'find out what all the fuss is about' and read The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. This is worth the hype and is a great children’s picture book. The Gruffalo is fun, well written and has lovely illustrations. The story follows in a long line of children’s tails where the main character meets a plethora or differing characters and tells a lie. However, unlike most books, in this story the end the main character doesn't meet his comeuppance, in the end he thinks fast on his feat and the book ends in a fun and unexpected manner, I can see myself reading this with many many children in the future.

SOA Listening Challenge 2011: Pick an audiobook that received a DIK grade at AAR in print format. TBR Challenge 2011. I rarely give 5 star ratings, but I can't really think of a complaint about this book. The writing is clever and witty, and the narration is truly masterful. Since the plot works as a series of vignettes, it is an easy book to put down at the end of a chapter, and that can be both good and bad, I suppose. But toward the end I really didn't want to put it down. I needed to know how Miss Pettigrew's amazing day was going to end. It was wonderful! I've seen the movie and enjoyed it very much, but the book (as is often the case) is even better!

This was fun to listen to as I walked on the treadmill. it is excellent adolescent historical fiction. I learned things about the Civil War that I didn't know.

I liked this book but it did take me a long time to get through it. I was interested when reading but it seemed to take a bit for me to pick it up. I do like the characters and such but it is a long book.

Her writing reminds me of Tolkien; overly intricate for my taste. Of course, Tolkien is the patron saint of over-elaboration. I spent a long time trying to figure out what this story was about. I finally realized it's really just following a certain group of people over a particular time in British history. It's depressing and drawn out, but I was recommended this book by someone who genuinely likes this author. So really I'm not saying this is a badly done book, simply that I dislike historical slice of life generational drama. Give it a try, at least.

Read this for book club several years ago. Picked it up again as I remember really liking it. I liked it again. Beautifully written.
