this was a fairly good book, though some of the descriptions of sexual activity and the main characters ability to break his own leg and pull out a tibia bone was hard to believe, but that is what made it a good easy to read book...the premise is that a doctor is recognized by a patient as being a former mob hitman...it goes back and forth in time to tell the story of how he got connected with the mob, and ultimately, how he tries to escape death himself.

This book just was not good. That said, it did exceed my expectations, which were that it would be total trash and unreadable. It was readable - laughable- but readable. You might want to invest in a book cover so people on the train can't see what you are reading. Besides the ultra-simplistic, juvenile writing style, the personalities and behavior of the characters are not believable at all. It's like V.C Andrews (or whoever wrote this book) had the crazy twisted plot in mind and paid no attention to making it convincing or conceivale. Kids locked in an attic for years? Their loving mothing doing a 180 into torturous psycho just because she turns out to be selfish? The fact that they were NEVER discovered up there? Oh, and the incest! Really not necessary for the plot development. The incest theme was basically there for fun and gross out factor, but was not made to be at all interesting or thought provoking. I guess that's V.C Andrews for you. Simon & Schuster pride!

I found the plot a little slow to get started--I wasn't really engaged in the story until the main character, Misha, finds himself in Absurdistan (around page 110). Though I thought Misha's voice was slightly annoying, the story was entertaining enough to make up for it. I'd wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone interested in descriptions of fat people having sex; for everyone else, I'd give it a solid B. Good summer reading.

This book got me through a hard time in my life, and it is also the reason why I went to graduate school. Perhaps I shouldn't rate it so high, seeing as I am now up to my eyeballs in debt. But seriously, this is one of Erdrich's best. It's funny, touching, and incredibly moving.
