Great story line. This book rekindled my passion to historical fiction. Whenever I hear of Russians - I have always seen them as warriors, people who lived in communism, split things among them on a regular basis and hence lived a happy life. I think I had seen Russia in the eyes of Stalin's believers or non-believers and never in the eyes of a Russian common man. The book gives that view. Its about a girl called Vera - a poor peasant girl- who goes through the second world war in the Soviet Russia. She lost her father to the communist Red Tape, lost her grandmother and sister to the German air bombs, mother and 5 year old son to the starvation imposed by the siege of Leningrad, and at last, her love of her life - her husband, and her daughter, because she thought they were dead! Vera changes her name, her identity and goes to live with an American soldier called Evan. She loves her family, her husband and the two lovely daughters she had, but never ever shows her love to the kids. Come to think of it, its very obvious, how would a mom who has encountered so much sufferings in her life, reveal herself to her daughters? She wants to put that past away from her. But then she cant love her second and third daughter without telling them about the first kid that she had and lost. All the love she had for her husband and her first family - the loss of every single person she loved, had made her feel that its her love that kills people and she doesnt want to show her love openly. She is a warrior - whether fighting to know about her father - who was stamped as the criminal of the country or fighting to marry the man she loved or going behind her children to save them from the enemy's bombs. She must have so much courage to just pull her son around on the sleigh cart to take him to hospitals- not sure if he would live for the next day, but she has to save him. The story also reveals the sufferings that the citizens of Leningrad surfaced in the first winter of the siege. Starvation, death, no place even to bury the bodies, cold, no way to keep them warm; food ration which was very meager and even that food had only uneatable wood shavings or oil cakes; and the enormous sacrifice of the people. Almost 2/3rd of the city died in the first winter, but the remaining 1/3rd lived because, the people who died, gave their last ration or portion of their food to the younger ones to make sure that they live. Vera gets a bottle of wine and bread from a neighbor, who feels that she wont cross to live the next day! Listen it: this is just a neighbor - not even family! Author says, it was not about a real person. It was a story that she wrote by doing a lot of research on the siege period. I cannot believe it. I feel there is a Vera who was living somewhere. or its probably a story of many many Vera's part and parcel of everybody's story! All I have heard about the Siege of Leningrad was that it was the longest in the history and the German's were not ready for the cold winter of Russia and hence they lost the Second World War. But this rosy picture painted by my academic history books are totally wrong! This story proves that it might be a victory for Russia but death for lot of Leningraders - not a real victory. Many people left the city or died, the people who came from other part of the city in the last year got a medal of honor for the bravery of the city!

I was disappointed that I didn't like this book more. It's a classic, the idea behind it is genius (as well as legendary) and everyone I've talked to about it absolutely adores the book. Despite the short-comings I had with Catch-22 it was still good and definitely lived up to it's earned titled as a classic. Perhaps my main problem with it was that it took me ages to read the book. Maybe because I started it around the beginning of the holiday season where life in general takes on a busy rush with little downtime. That and also, it's a book that once you start reading you can definitely stay absorbed and engaged, but finding the will and energy to pick it up... well- that was pretty difficult. It almost felt, to me, like required reading from high school- you knew you were going to enjoy it once you started reading it, but it was a brand of homework that you (or at least I) always struggled to avoid. But yes- once I did start reading it I enjoyed it, despite my difficulty following it on nights I was almost too tired to keep my vision focused. Yossarian, I felt was the perfect person to follow throughout our story. Non-threatening, not overly-neurotic, funny and clever, yet angry and assertive, he was a great counter balance to all the interesting and random people that came in and out of his service life. There were a lot of people, though. Or at least it felt like there were a lot of people, and that was part of the problem keeping up with the book. Especially the commanding officers. Often they blurred together and I couldn't keep them apart from one another. Certain ones popped up that I never remembered being introduced to, and others just disappeared... Major Major anyone? But at least Yossarian was a reassuring constant who kept the book afloat. After all there was really no plot-line doing that, the "story" all rested on Yossarian. And while I was annoyed by the huge amount of characters, they still all felt needed, so I just took it as a neccessary evil. The growth of Yossarian was also really moving. There is no given time frame, only the amount of missions being raised, so the reader doesn't know how long Yossarian has been flying. But his personality and nature in the beginning changes and evolves to something obviously more jaded and matured (and of course worn down) by the end of the book, but still maintaining the spitfire personality we first saw. Hands down the best aspect of this book was Heller's writing. Not only is our central problem the issue of Catch-22, but everything is written as it's own small version of a Catch-22. The steady flow of hypocrisies and ironies were beautifully and humorously written. The creativity and genius that was involved in the writing definitely marked Heller as an author to be reckoned with. It was his crafting of the overall novel that encouraged me to seek out his other works to see how if his writing changes, which I kind of hope because the style he chose for this book really could only fit this book. Let me give this advice if you're reading this book or thinking about reading it. Do it. Keep going. The ending definitely picks up a bit more of a storyline to push you through those last chapters. Plus- Heller's writing is phenomenal, his words, structures, characters all worth seeing through until the end because they stay strong and do not become old and hackneyed. I'm glad I read this classic. I may even read it again in a couple years (not during the holidays) and see how I enjoy it then. My boss (who says this is her favorite book) tells me it gets better with every reading so I hope the same is true with me.

** spoiler alert ** This book was okay. I feel like it wasn't as good as the Vampire Academy series because for me it had a slow start. It didn't really get super interesting until the last hundred pages when the truth was finally unraveling. I kind of suspected Lee, but not too much, so it was a little bit of a shock to find out that he was one of the bad guys. I'm pretty sure that Sydney and Adrian will get together in the next book, but I'm wondering if Ian will ever come in the book, the one from The Last Sacrifice who was with Sydney during the big trial of Rose getting busted out of prison. Also, another interesting revelation was Eddie's love towards Jill. I would really love to see them get together and it really makes sense since Eddie was the only one who came to Jill's aid when the assassins came to try to kill her at court. I knew that the fire amulet would work, but it was very surprising to find out that Sydney has some magical ability because until now, we didn't know that humans were able to possess any magical abilities. Another thing that will probably come up in the next book is who was calling Nevermore to find out if they knew where vampires were. That will definitely come up in the next book. One last interesting and exciting thing is that Dimitri is back!! I'm really excited to see him because I was a Rose and Dimitri fan the whole way. Although Adrian is a nice guy, I just really liked Dimitri as a love interest for Rose better. I wasn't sure if I wanted to read the next one with how slowly this one felt like it progressed, but now that Dimitri is back, Eddie and Jill have something going on, and there is a flame between Adrian and Sydney that has been ignited, I'm definitely going to read the next one.
