Book #1 of 2009 - borrowed from the library. This was interesting and - like "Garden Spells" full of strange and deep magic. It was short and sweet, and easy to read.

I enjoyed this book well enough, but I was satisfied with reading just one. There was nothing in it to make me want to read more of the "time quartet."

This book is an essential read for anyone interested in feminist and or gender related issues. An absolute classic. Here are a few memorable excerpts: 1. "Partiarchy is the power of the fathers: a familial-social, ideological, political system in which men - by force, direct pressure, or through ritual, tradition, law, and language, customs, etiquette, education, and the division of labor, determine what part women shall or shall not play, and in which the female is everywhere subsumed under the male." -a nice definition since so many fumble with it usually 2. "A crucial moment in human conscioussness, then, arrives when man discovers that it is he himself, not the moon of the spring rains or the spirits of the dead, who impregnates the woman; that the child she carries and gives birth to is his child, who can make him immortal, both mysticallyl, by propitiating the gods with prayers and sacrifices when he is dead, and concretely, by receiving the partimony from him. At this crossroads of sexual possession, property ownership, and the desire to transcend death, developed the institution we know: the present-day patriarchal family with its supernaturalizing the penis, its division of labor by gender, its emotional, physical, and material possessiveness, its idea of monogamous marriage until death (and its severe penalties for adultery by the wife), the "illegitimacy" of a child born outside wedlock, the economic dependency of women, the unpaid domestic services of the wife, the obedience of women and children to male authority, the imprinting and continuation of heterosexual roles" 3. "The pig, declared an unclean animal in the Koran and the Old Testament, was a reiterative figure in goddess - religion; the sow was sacred in Crete, sometimes appeared as an embodiment of Isis, was sacrificed at the feast of Aphrodite, and was a symbol of the Eleusinian cult of Demeter. "Wherever the eating of pork is forbidden and the pig is held to be unclean, we can be sure of its originally sacred character"" -something I never knew 4. "Women who refuse to become mothers are not merely emotionally suspect, but are dangerous. Not only do they refuse to continue the species; they also deprive society of its emotional leaven - the suffering of the mother" 5. "As her sons have seen her: the Mother in patriarchy: controlling, erotic, castrating, heart-suffering, guilt-ridden, and guilt-provoking; a marble brow, a huge breast, an avid cave; between her legs snakes, swamp-grass, or teeth; on her lap a helpless infant or a martyred son" -nice

I cannot resist a man speaking Spanish. Especially if he is saying such pretty things. This was beautiful and hot and just warmed me from head to toes to heart.

The sequel to Sabriel, this books is about another young girl and her attempts to deal with the fact that she doesn't fit into the society she was born into. The book is heartbreaking at times, funny at others, you really feel for this character with all your heart.
This book is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It was a little slow when I started it, but as I moved through it the character of Marguerite seemed to blossom before my very eyes. The plot is also excellent. I have read many books, many of which have daring, brave, and cunning escapes. This said, however, Sir Percy's trick to escape Chauvelin towards the end truly takes the cake in clever escapes.

I loved this book so much. At times it was sad to read, especially when you saw what life was like for Offred before everything changed - it made me wonder how I would cope in such a situation, to lose everyone I loved. I don't in any way believe that the world would ever change into the one presented in 'The Handmaid's Tale', but I also don't think that Atwood wrote this as a 1984-esque warning to the world. Maybe she based some of her ideas on 'What if?'s about situations occurring in the 1980s, but overall 'The Handmaid's Tale' is a marvellous work of fiction. Atwood managed to create a world and convincingly show how our world changed into this new world. She created a character who wasn't always likeable, but was most definitely believable. And above all, she created a compelling and enticing read. Once finished, I wanted to know more about Offred and her world, and how it eventually dissolved. I didn't worry about whether what was portrayed in this book could come true, because this is, for me, a work of fiction. I wasn't scared by 'The Handmaiden's Tale' and I think it's a little rude to mark this novel down just because "That couldn't happen in today's society" when Atwood has clearly worked so hard to create Offred's world. 10/10
