I always found it odd (and somewhat unpleasant) that his stories so often had a tragic ending; but once I learned more about his life, they made much more sense - and were more interesting. Now as I read his stories I appreciate them much more. Even though some of the stories are a little "dark" for my taste, I understand that the characters often speak for the author, and that much can be learned about Hans Christian Anderson by reading his works.

It's so melodramatic to say that every woman should read this book, but, well, every woman should read this book. Published in the early '90s, it definitely touches on points that have changed and evolved over the past 15 years, but the foundations of Wolf's argument are just as relevant today as they were then. Wolf does get a bit preachy at times--I found myself skimming through sections where I felt a little like I was being beaten over the head with a point that had been adequately stated already. But in so many ways, Wolf is right on the mark, with equal parts jaw-dropping facts and thought-provoking discussions of larger issues. Her chapters on beauty-product advertising and women in the workplace fell a little flat for me--I felt that many of the points have become less relevant over time, and much of it was talk I've heard before. But the chapters on plastic surgery, sex, and the culture of thinness were fascinating--even novel--and got me thinking about issues I was already aware of in totally new ways. In the end, The Beauty Myth is a presentation of facts and ideas--some more strongly emphasized than others--that act as a jumping off point for the reader's own thoughts about what feminism means. Wolf does away with the feminist stereotypes, giving them no more attention than they deserve, and gives the reader full license to take what the book offers and use it in whatever way is relevant to her as an individual. It's definitely no light read, but it's an important book--the kind that makes you wish for some cosmic book club meeting among all women in the Western world to acknowledge and hash out the issues at the root of the way we live, which we've all been taught to accept without question.

Having read this right after reading President Hinkley's biography, I really enjoyed seeing the similarities and differences between two people who became prophets. A really great example. Not quite as polished as President Hinkley's bio, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I love this. The introduction by Bergman's long-time producer, describing the Swedish commitment to theater and how that commitment transferred into film is especially interesting.
My friend, Scott, who is an excellent cook, recommended this book to me. I confess that I have not read it lately. Read it once or twice and LEARN to make really good food. For me, it was the advice on making soup that clinched it. I now make soup at least once a week and it's very good!

I really did like this book. It was about a girl that went threw a hold load of things to make herself perfect and stand out between the people that she went to school with and lived around. Being beautiful was her only goal in life and she tried so hard to make this happen that she just went threw a really bad life. Thinking she could get beautiful, she thought she could get her face seen, her voice heard and her as a whole noticed. This book is really good and I would recommend it to all the teens out there because it showed how society corrupts people.

I bought this book ages ago and for some reason Have only just got round to reading it, It reminded me very much of Evelyn Waughs A Handful of Dust. The charqacters are not likeable and their behaviour leaves something to be desired but as they fall into a decline not of their own making, you are left feeling sad and sorry for them.

This book was wonderful. It proves a different view into a childhood classic. If you are looking for a light read that is truly entertaining, then this is the perfect pick. It has it all...murder, fights, romance, etc.
