I'm rather disappointed with this book because I love the concept - the murderous urges of ordinary women. The first 20 pages or so were fine but after that it was like a free for all. It seemed like the author had four storylines she wanted to write and since she couldn't decide between them, she shoved them all into this book. The book ends up being a hodgepodge of stories and once you near the end, they don't have anything to do with the main characters. The book started with definite potential but it ended with me thinking "why did I waste time reading this?!" I gave this book two stars because I like the concept, however, in the end this author did not do it justice.

I like black comedies. I like cynical rebellious characters. But when I'm saying to myself "Why am I reading this" every three pages it either means I don't get it or the author, as brilliantly as he writes, has nothing to say. I'm opting for the latter. The lead character has nothing going for him. He is not just cynical. He is a nihilist and a whiner. I waited for it all to come together and all I got was more silliness. Granted, Palahniuk is a marvelous wordsmith, the kind I would give my left pinkie to be, but there should be something worthwhile to say. This is the first Palahniuk novel I've read and I may have been disappointed as Fight Club is one of my favorite movies. Perhaps I should have tried that particular novel first.

Beautiful, and sometimes very sad. It made me want to race to the Old Testament and find out about Dinah (whom I had heard little about...of course, that is the point). Neat take from a woman's perspective.

OK maybe I'm more sensitive because I come from a home of verbal abuse...but I was disgusted by the life she was led to believe to be true and the way their husbands "determined" their worth, and that she and many others are forced to sacrifice themselves not knowing the value of their selves as a daughter of our Heavenly Father's. Very sad. I never knew how extreme their beliefs were.

I was terribly sorry to finish this as it was wonderful. I learned about the English Channel Islands (didn't know they existed) and that they were occupied by the Germans in WWII. The character development and plot were great fun so the bonus in reading it is that you get a great story and a history lesson all at the same time!
