Bir İnsan Kaynakları Masalı - Özden Aslan TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

I went in with high hopes and was seriously let down. There’s so much wrong with this book I can’t express it all. I get it. It’s supposed to be a clever little satire about the news media in an age of fear and uncertainty. I really get it. Unfortunately, it’s way too clever for its own good. The single biggest problem is the main character. Let’s get back to Writing 101. Protagonists, in most fictional stories, need to be relatable to the reader. They need to have flaws, make mistakes, have fear and uncertainty. If we can’t connect or put ourselves in their figurative shoes of the protagonist, then the story becomes a serious slog. If you can’t root for the hero, and the book wants you to root for the hero, that’s a serious issue, especially in a book that has zombies! Which brings us to our hero, Georgia Mason (and to a lesser extent, her brother Shaun), a blogger/journalist set to cover a political campaign amidst a worldwide zombie outbreak. Here’s the problem: Georgia is so freaking self-righteous. At numerous times I almost stopped reading I couldn’t handle her moralizing platitudes. Everything she does is ethical, moral, transparent, for the good of the public. She never questions anything she’s doing: she’s always does the “right thing” by default and damn anyone that thinks otherwise. At one point a character calls her out on her BS and is immediately slapped in the face by another character. Oh, and did I mention how cool she is? She has a disease where she must wear sunglasses. All the time. And she’s really slick with technology and gadgets. And for some reason has dozens of unquestionably devoted blogging staff across the globe. Other minor annoyances: The villains are transparently bad, the good guys (Georgia, Shaun, bloggers, journalists) are uniformly good. Oh, you mean the main bad guy is “militant” and has “extremist views”? How novel! How original! The “plot twists” are telegraphed a mile away. Honestly, I have no idea what the hell the author was thinking. This is possibly the worst protagonist of any book I’ve ever read. Maybe someone out there will say “That’s the point! It’s satire!” but sorry, that excuse just doesn’t cut it for me. You can do a clever satire with likeable characters. But sorry M. Grant, self-righteousness is usually not the most likable trait. You blew it. Big time. Final note (SPOILER): It was even hinted at the villains behind everything were TOBACCO COMPANIES. Are. You. Freaking. Kidding. Me.
