This is a beautiful love letter to the Sierra Nevada mountains. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Arnold follows the early exploration of the Sierra Nevada peaks by famous conservationists, naturalists and scientists. Each chapter describes the peak, the explorer and then Arnold's own expedition to climb the peak using the same techniques, as closely as possible, as the original mountaineer. I read the book while hiking in the high country of Yosemite. I can't imagine a most inspirational book to read while hiking in the Sierras.

I'm rereading this on my PDA on my walk across Japan (the book itself is a beautiful object, well laid out and full of nicely reproduced classic Chinese paintings, but too heavy to be carrying). I've been surprised how much I'm getting out of it, even though I've read it dozens of times. The lessons it speaks of are being hammered into my bones every day on the road. A lot of people seem to dislike Mitchell's translation because it isn't written in faux "Confucius say" speak, or because it isn't a literal translation that is painful to read and incomprehensible without a thousand footnotes about ancient Chinese culture. Instead, it is written in plain modern English, simple and smooth like a river stone. It might not be the best translation -- though, when it comes to the Tao Te Ching, multiple translations and footnotes should be read to get a real feel for and understanding of the text -- but this one is definitely my favourite. Compare these translations of the beginning of Chapter 8: The highest goodness, water-like, Does good to everything and goes Unmurmuring to places men despise; But so, is close in nature to the Way. The highest excellence is like (that of) water. The excellence of water appears in its benefiting all things, and in its occupying, without striving (to the contrary), the low place which all men dislike. Hence (its way) is near to (that of) the Tao. The supreme good is like water, which nourishes all things without trying to. It is content with the low places that people disdain. Thus it is like the Tao. Which of these is the best translation? I don't know, but I know I prefer to read the one that flows clearly like water.

This bookis not really a romance,,, more like abuse, rough sex and a whole bunch of unlikeable characters. I couldn't finish it but I sincerely hope the author didn't end it with a wedding and pregnancy thinking that would certify it as a romance novel.

One of the things I mentioned in the All-American Girl reviews is that Mia is a very immature character compared to other Meg Cabot heroines, and it shows in this book. It also doesn’t help that the major subplot is lifted from Ready or Not, although Mia’s approach to the sex question is vastly different from Sam’s. The one thing I did like about this is that you see Mia’s confidence growing, with the main plot of her being thrust into the student council president race. She actually does speak up on issues, without Lilly or other friends pushing her to do so. It’s a direction I really hoped would show up in later volumes (which I’ll get to when I get to them). The subplot with Michael and the question of whether or not that they should “do it,” on the other hand, really illustrates her immaturity. Mia continuously freaks out at any mention of committing the “act,” but without sitting down and talking it through with her boyfriend. I am also not a fan of the subplot with Ms. Martinez—while I can sort of see and understand Mia’s reaction of “OMG HOW DARE SHE NOT THINK MY WRITING IS BRILLIANT!!”, I’m not a fan of the obvious offense of “Pop culture references aren’t high literature.” (Which becomes more egregious once you learn that it was meant to be a take that at some of Meg Cabot’s critics.) There’s a lot of wasted potential in the book, particularly in making Mia grow as a character, and it really shows in the writing.

I really enjoyed all the stories in this book. I devoured them in like two days. I know they're erotic paranormal but I read them more for the paranormal. I don't care much for novels with romance in them. The female characters were a little annoying, a little too perfect. The males were far more interesting. I loved that the stories didn't have vampires or werewolves- those themes have been done to death. The authors created their own creatures and their own worlds, both of which were so imaginative. The descriptions were sometimes a bit over the top but I'm noticing that's just how paranormal romance novels are. I found myself skipping a lot of parts but it didn't take away from how much I enjoyed each story.

The recipes certainly don't use ingredients that are convenient or family-friendly. How easy is it to find ground buffalo (for example)? I'm sure the recipes might be delicious, but I'm not going to go to the effort to find the ingredients and try them.

I read this quasi anthology book before, during and after reading Saramago's book "The Year Of The Death Of Ricardo Reis" to really appreciate and know better the main characters of the book, which are the interchangeable separate entities Ricardo Reis and Fernando Pessoa, one is the creator of other, whoever that is.. Although my personality dictates that it is very difficult for me to fully enjoy this seemingly jumbled collection of what I may term as Pessoanism, I have to say that it serves well as an introduction of sorts to the poet, putting some of his texts together (verses and proses) and suggesting context to them, including commentaries, altogether creating a bust-like impression of an artist who is very elusive and whose works are bewilderingly diffuse...
