This is a great entrant into the crime genre. The Denmark setting makes it a little different than the glut of Swedish crime fiction that's come out lately, but there's still the feeling of exotic chill. The story is layered and interesting, and I had to know what was going to happen next. The two POV style is different than most mystery novels I've read recently, and it really ramps up the tension. There is some stuff in here that made me squirm, but I was interested in spite of that. I was surprised that this book took me so long to read, because it seemed like things just kept happening. I do wish the ending wasn't quite so depressing, but at least it seems like all the plot points were wrapped up. I'll enjoy finding out what other cold cases Department Q solves next. I received this as a digital ARC from Netgalley.

The pop star theme seems to crop up pretty often in manga series: Gravitation and Skip Beat are just a couple. There really is a manga out there to fill every niche of interest, however--and while Gravitation juxtaposes boy love and Skip Beat plays for laughs, Princess Ai is really all about the fashion. The style of the artwork is in a similar vein as Bizenghast or CLAMP's xxholic. Look for lush, intricate detail and variety with Ai's costumes throughout. The visual appeal of this manga is high beyond a doubt, and for some this will more than compensate for the weak plot and two-dimensional characters. This ultimate collection takes the reader through the princess's sudden appearance on earth and (ostensibly) her journey to retrieve her memories and find clues to her past. In reality though, it's like a pretty convenient excuse for her to hang out around earth and flirt with the glam life of a pop star. The "songs" interspersed throughout are overwrought, one is actually uninentionally funny ("Broken Leash") and all feel slightly clunky (although Courtney Love's contribution is definitely the best of the lot). Age Recommendation 12+ Outside of Ai's parade of cleavage-friendly Gothic Lolita getups and a (very brief) scene in a gentlemen's club (during which you see nothing) this ultimate collection is actually pretty darn tame. The violence amounts to a couple of brief but intense skirmishes (one ends with the two principals becoming friends)and some archery. A gun is waved a couple of times to no purpose. Even the deaths of major characters either happen offstage or indirectly. I would say the target audience here is probably a 14-15 year old girl, because they're going to appreciate the fashion element and the turbulent emotions behind the songs, but there's really nothing all that scandalous here.

First of Christie's books I'd read, and I had no idea of the delightful, whimsical humor to be found amidst the mystery. (I particularly like when Poiroit dedicates himself to the serious matter of keeping his moustaches out of his soup.) I'd caught the tail end of the movie adaptation on TV once, so I already knew the solution to the mystery before reading. It attests to the quality of the book that this didn't diminish my enjoyment whatsoever. Knowing the answer, I was much more cognizant of the clues, however subtle, as they occurred. And the reveal of the solution at the end is so well-crafted and moving, it didn't matter that it was no surprise to me: reading it moved me almost to tears.

Fire-Hunter has been a favorite book of mine since I read it in fourth grade, and I was delighted to be able to find at least one reprint. Frankly, I could do without the additions by David Drake, but it's fairly simple to skip them and simply enjoy the original story.

3.5 - Interesting take on modern gypsies, but I don't know enough to know if it's romanticized/overly dramatic. Decently written, and interesting since I have an interest. If you're totally plot driven with no interest in the Roma, though, probably don't bother.

My mother gave me these books for Christmas (supposedly they were on a reading list for school) and I couldn't put them down. Which made for a very interesting Christmas morning. I'm still pretty consumed with how much of an effect these books had upon me and why exactly I'm drawn to graphic novels. More later when I figure out how/what to say.
